Broward Health today announced changes to its financial team including the additions of Samantha Gardner as vice president of Managed Care and Onel Rodriguez as chief financial officer for Broward Health Coral Springs, and the promotion of Alexander M. Fernandez to vice president of financial operations. All three will report directly to Broward Health Systems’ CFO, Alan Goldsmith. 
“We are very pleased to be welcoming both Samantha and Onel to Broward Health, and look forward to working with Alex in his new role,” said Goldsmith. “They all bring with them a wealth of experience and leadership skills, and we are confident their contributions will be a tremendous asset to our financial team.”  
As vice president of Managed Care, Samantha Gardner is responsible for planning and directing the effective development, execution, implementation and administration of Broward Health’s comprehensive managed care plan. She will work closely with the health system’s CFO in seeking opportunities for business development, while nurturing existing partnerships/relationships.
Gardner is a Six Sigma Certified proven performer who has over two decades of experience in the healthcare industry in administrative settings with hospitals, physician groups and insurance companies. In the past, Gardner served as an Associate Vice President to the COO of Jackson Health System in Miami and assisted with their system-wide turn around.  She made her footprint there by successfully restructuring several areas of the Health System in order to create financial stability and ensure growth and profitability. Aside from launching two local physician related startup companies, her career has also included leadership positions at Mercy Hospital and Cigna Healthcare.
Gardner has an MBA from the University of Florida, and a Master of Health Administration from University of Phoenix. She is also a Certified Medical Tourism Professional (CMTP) and a graduate of the Effective Negotiating Program by Karrass World Leaders.
As CFO, Onel Rodriguez will be responsible for the administration, development and implementation of financial and accounting operations for Broward Health Coral Springs. He will provide strategic leadership and oversight of the fiscal operations of the region.
Previously, Rodriguez was vice president of finance at HCA’s JFK Medical Center where he oversaw revenue enhancements, cost-saving initiatives, accounting improvements, and preparation of reports for management on key financial metrics for the 245-bed hospital.  He was with Tenet Healthcare for more than nine years in various positions handling financial responsibilities for several hospitals in its system. 
Rodriguez, who is currently pursuing a Florida CPA designation, received his Master of Science in accounting from Kaplan University, a bachelor’s degree in business administration from St. Thomas University, and an associate degree in accounting from Miami Dade College.  
As VP of financial services, Alexander M. Fernandez will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and system wide oversight of the daily operations of general accounting, financial planning and patient billing services. Fernandez joined Broward Health in 2014, and most recently served as chief financial officer at Broward Health Medical Center and Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital.
Prior to working at Broward Health, he was the chief operation officer at Tenet Healthcare Corporation where he worked in collaboration with the chief executive officer to formulate and execute strategies designed to drive volumes to sustain the long term financial viability of the medical center. 
Fernandez earned a master of business administration and a bachelor of science in accounting from Florida Atlantic University; and holds a bachelor of science in financial and multinational business from Florida State University.
