AccuDial Pharmaceutical Takes Guesswork Out of OTC Dosing

AccuDial Pharmaceutical’s innovative packaging and labeling system is revolutionizing the way doctors and parents provide over-the-counter (OTC) liquid medications to children. Headquartered in Palm Beach, Fla., AccuDial first rolled out its rotating label and delivery system in Canada in January 2010, and is now set to begin distribution of its children’s fever and pain medication in the United States this fall. AccuDial’s system enables caregivers to administer OTC medications to children up to 95 pounds based on weight in two-pound increments, and milliliter and half milliliters, rather than relying solely on age.
 
“When parents wake to the cries of a feverish 3-year-old in the middle of the night, they want to provide immediate relief for their child,” said AccuDial’s Chairman and CEO Bob Terwilliger. “They shouldn’t have to search for a kitchen teaspoon which is pretty much the standard way children’s pain and fever medications are administered today and then guess how much to give the child. With Children’s AccuDial, parents twist the label on the bottle to find their child’s weight in pounds and the specific dose recommendation – given in milliliters – appears in a window beneath it. They then pour the medication into a dosing device which is included with every package and is calibrated in milliliter and half milliliters.”
 
According to the American Medical Association, 72 percent of children are dosed inaccurately with OTC medications. In the United States alone, more than 27,000 children under the age of 14 were admitted to emergency rooms last year because they had overdosed on OTC acetaminophen, a common pain and fever treatment. At its worst, overdosing can lead to irreparable liver damage, even death. Under-dosing can also pose different risks, often prolonging illness and recovery.
 
Dr. Brian Kaplan, who specializes in internal medicine and emergency medicine in Florida, coaxed Terwilliger out of retirement in 2007 to help him address head-on the escalating numbers of children being brought into emergency rooms due to overdosing of acetaminophen, cough and allergy medications. “Brian, who has two children of his own, made a strong business case for administering medications by weight,” said Terwilliger. “The FDA currently makes no distinction between a 6-year-old and an 11-year-old when it comes to dosing, yet their weight can vary by 100 percent. Age-based dosing is extremely inaccurate in the mid and upper ranges of each group and that is where the problem lies. AccuDial’s goal is to provide consistent dosing across weight ranges.”
 
AccuDial spent 41 months researching its two-part, patented labeling and delivery system and obtaining the appropriate licensing to market and distribute its products. The company is positioned to change the way liquid medications will be dosed globally. It has 17 approved health-care medications in Canada and is filing to enter the United Kingdom market. “We also have agreements to distribute our products in the Middle East and North Africa,” said Terwilliger.
 
AccuDial is launching its children’s pain and fever medication in the United States through Amazon.com, Target.com and Drugstore.com. “The Internet is a good way to launch a product,” said Terwilliger. “Our expectation is to then make our products available in U.S. stores next spring. Between now and then, we will also sign agreements with stores to market our products under their individual brand names at a discount.” The full line of AccuDial pediatric products also includes an allergy formulation, and several varieties of cold and cough medicines in tasty flavors such as cherry, grape and fruit punch. AccuDial’s price point is on a par with other leading brands.
 
AccuDial’s system is gaining recognition and widespread support. This spring, Children’s AccuDial won gold in the Consumer Packaged Goods category of the 2011 Edison Awards for innovation and application in the 21st century. In accepting the prestigious award, Terwilliger said that “Winning an Edison Award is both humbling and exciting for AccuDial Pharmaceutical…We found that by leveraging innovative technology, AccuDial’s labeling system is able to meet both a functional and emotional need in consumers that resonates in the market.”
 
Next in the pipeline for AccuDial are divisions for institutional, prescription and veterinary products. “We’ve developed a special cradle that can fit any vial size between 5 cc’s and 50 cc’s for injectables. And there is a huge market for products for pet owners and vets,” said Terwilliger. “All animal owners know that you can’t give an animal medicine based on age. Our products will be dose by weight and administered by oral syringe.”
 
Terwilliger has taken AccuDial’s system to tradeshows across the country and is gratified by the response. “When I sit down and demonstrate our system, the usual response is ‘Wow! Somebody finally fixed the problem,’” said Terwilliger. “Last year, we surveyed 3,100 Canadian pediatricians and family healthcare physicians. Of 3,100 surveyed, 97 percent said they were recommending AccuDial weight-based products to parents and caregivers. That says a lot.”
