University of Miami Researcher Wins Prestigious Cardiology Research Award

The Florida Heart Research Institute has named Dr. Lina Shehadeh its tenth “Stop Heart Disease Researcher of the Year” at the annual meeting of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (FCACC).

Dr. Shehadeh was recently promoted to Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami for her innovative work on the molecular biology of atherosclerosis. She currently serves as an integral part of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute where she has made some very compelling discoveries regarding vascular smooth muscle cellular plasticity, atherosclerosis and the use of aptamirs for the delivery of microRNA's. Her new findings regarding the role of microRNA's in switching vascular smooth muscle cells from a proliferative/pathologic to a differentiated/healthy phenotype, as well as the activity of these same microRNA's in blocking cholesterol synthesis promise to make a major contribution to our understanding and treatment/prevention of the atherosclerotic process.
