In response to the high growth in job options for individuals equipped with healthcare informatics and analytics education, Florida International University’s Master of Science in Health Informatics and Analytics (MSHI&A) will open its second fully online cohort this October.


I heard a woman’s voice near my bedside, “I’m going to get you a warm blanket.” The woman returned and covered me from my chin down to my toes and wiped the tears from my eyes. I asked her, “What is your name?” She answered, “Oh I’m just a volunteer ... ” As she was walking away, I called out, “Wait! Please, I need to know your name so I can thank you properly when I am better … ”

Hospital volunteers are an integral part of the patient experience at Broward Health. They are involved in a variety of roles throughout our healthcare system, such as transporting patients, changing linens, greeting family members, administrative duties, managing the gift shop and much more. 

Marlene Duchatellier decided to become a hospital volunteer at Good Samaritan Medical Center because of the way she can help patients and their loved ones when they come to the hospital. In a way, she says she is doing it to honor her late mother, who once was hospitalized and had volunteers help her with the care she needed when she was a patient.
