ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) is a technology that can support a compromised heart and lungs, keeping critically-ill patients alive when their own organs can't sustain them. A machine does this by pumping blood from the body to an artificial lung that adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide.

At first glance one might not see the link between a renowned business school’s sponsorship of an international health care conference and the social determinants of health care. However, Dr. Steven Ullmann, Department Chair and Professor of Health Management and Policy at University of Miami School of Business has plenty of reasons why he is expecting 1,000 participants for the school’s 9th annual signature program

Last July, Lincoln Mendez of Baptist Health South Florida succeeded Jerry Fedele as CEO of Boca Raton Regional Hospital upon Fedele’s retirement and after the merger of the two healthcare organizations. Prior to coming to Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Mendez had also served as the CEO of South Miami Hospital since early 2010.

According to Wellington Regional Medical Center (WRMC) Associate Administrator Diego Perilla, one of the keys to being successful in the healthcare field is to never stop learning. While participating in the Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) COO Development Program, he also oversees hospital operations at Wellington, supporting 10 departments throughout the hospital including procedural areas, ancillary services and clinical support areas.

As technology advances, so have the ways in which it can be used to make the patient experience, and the employee experience, even better. Helping people navigate hospitals and healthcare facilities, otherwise known as wayfinding, is just one use of digital technology - but it can do much more than that.

The 2020 Florida Legislative Session kicked off earlier this month with confirmation that health care will remain at the center of the debate in Tallahassee. The Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) has been busy setting the table for a successful session by hosting a number of events and engagements with the Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation.

Right now, the economy is absolutely cranking. Be it the stock market, consumer confidence, household income, or whatever metric you look at, things economically are very good right now. One thing that is amazing are the employment numbers. Not only are more people working than ever before, but the unemployment numbers are at record lows.
