A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum ...

And no – I was not wearing a toga! Actually it was a meeting of the South Florida Healthcare Executive Forum (SFHEF) to be exact. Carol likes to say I generally arrive at meetings much too early, with tons of materials stuffed in 2 or 3 briefcases – looking like a refugee from a luggage convention. On this particular occasion, I did not disappoint. However, the difference was on this day, I managed to trip over the curb in the parking lot, spilling the contents of my multiple briefcases and my full coffee cup like Mt. Vesuvius on a really active day. Noting my distress, a helpful fellow came to my aid and while we were stuffing a week’s worth of e-mails and agendas back into my cases, we got into a conversation. Noting the newspaper’s name, he mentioned he’d heard of us but to be honest – never considered it something that would interest him because he was involved with assisted living residences and SFHN was only for Hospitals – wasn’t it?

Well, at that point, any one who knows me can just imagine my reaction. I quickly explained that despite our name, we were a healthcare newspaper read by healthcare professionals of every "make and model." He still looked a bit skeptical until I reminded him that who better to recommend an assisted living facility than a fellow healthcare professional. His eyes lit up as he considered; and at that point, I wanted to sing like Professor ‘iggins in My Fair Lady, "By George, I think (s)he’s got it!" And a new convert to South Florida Hospital News was born.

But the point of all this is pretty simple. This isn’t the first time I’ve run up against this case of mistaken identity. So much so, that Carol and I have been mulling a name change for several months. Although we would never want to change our original name, we do think it’s time to make a little addition to our masthead. So much has happened in healthcare over the last 5 years, and more and more healthcare is taking place outside of hospitals and traditional facilities. And who knows how the healthcare industry and professions will morph over the next 5 years? So like Moses, I proclaim from this day forward we shall be known as the South Florida Hospital News and Healthcare Report – the Region’s Monthly Newspaper for Healthcare Professionals and Physicians. (Oops - Carol just told me to get off my mountain and get back to work!)

But before I do, I would be remiss in not sending a "shout out" to the Emergency Department of West Boca Medical Center. Carol and I have had occasion to pay them two visits in the last month with absolutely no complaints. We even managed to visit during identical shifts a few weeks apart. The professionalism and great attitude demonstrated by Dr. Hunter Brown and the whole ED staff is a terrific example for emergency departments everywhere!
