Broward Health Coral Springs: Growth Brings Greater Access to Care

Broward Health Coral Springs, a 250-bed hospital, has been serving the Coral Springs community for more than 30 years with a full continuum of care, as well as a community education center with an array of classes. But as community needs grow, so too has this hospital.

Over the past two years Broward Health recognized the growing needs of western Broward County. It committed $65 million to expanding services offered at Broward Health Coral Springs with the addition of the hospital’s new patient tower that features all private rooms. The tower enabled the expansion of women’s and children’s hospital services in addition to a Surgery Center, according to Jared Smith, CEO since 2018.

Women’s services has expanded its portfolio of care and offers a full range of diagnostic through specialized therapeutic programming, including breast care and diagnostic imaging, gynecology and maternity (with private birthing suites and post-partum family-centered rooms), gynecology-oncology, uro-gynecology, and a focus on advanced cardiac and cancer specialties designed to meet the needs of the area’s growing female population.

One unique technology in the breast care suite of services is designed to ease women’s fears of diagnostic services. Mammography now features smart curve technology for breast exams. Women are often fearful of perceived pain from the pressure applied during a mammography. The smart curve technique – the first offered in Broward County – lessens the pressure on the breast without compromising the diagnostic quality. Other upgrades include 3D mammography techniques, stereotactic breast biopsies, and bone density testing for osteoporosis.

The new tower also provided a 10-bed NICU featuring all private rooms for the tiniest patients, from 2.2 pounds or 28 weeks gestation. The privacy allows for a calmer, more soothing atmosphere for skin-to-skin time and parent/baby bonding without alarms and voices that can cause anxiety for babies and parents. Additionally, with the expansion comes seven-day, round-the-clock, onsite pediatric care and the anticipated arrival of a pediatric orthopedic specialist. The NICU also has the Baby Cuddlers program, where volunteers help calm babies when moms or dads need a rest or go home to care for other children.

“As part of the Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital, our pediatric service is known for its specialized pediatric emergency department and pediatric inpatient and intensive care units – all complete with a child life specialist and pet therapy program,” Smith said. “This enhancement of family-friendly children’s services underscores our commitment to the health and wellness of our kids.”

Broward Health also annually hosts Camp Coral Kids, which is Broward County’s only medically supervised diabetic summer camp.

The Surgery Center underwent exponential change with the addition of 28 private post-operative rooms. The center offers advanced robotic navigation surgery instrumentation that may shorten length of stays and could provide faster, less painful recoveries.

“Our patients and physicians deserve this advanced robotic assistance, which enhances our surgeons’ abilities to precisely reach problematic areas and correct a range of medical conditions through smaller incisions,” Smith said. “In general, these less invasive procedures can result in positive patient outcomes and satisfaction.”

All ICUs now house intensivists, physicians who specialize in care of critically ill patients, 24/7. Physicians and nurses and other clinicians conduct multidisciplinary rounds that can lead to a high level of bedside care, improved outcomes, and reduced length of stay and mortality.

Cardiac Cath Lab to Open Soon
At Broward Health Coral Springs there is more to come. In April, the hospital will open a cardiac catheterization lab to expand heart-related diagnoses and therapies. New and affiliated medical staff credentialed in cardiac, thoracic and vascular care will bring advanced care to the community.

Cardiac catheterization is a minimally invasive procedure designed to provide detailed and accurate information in cardiac care. It can determine if there is any blockage of the coronary arteries, assess heart valve function, and measure and record pressures in various heart chambers. Plans for a mid-April ribbon cutting and open house are in the planning stages.

“As a system, Broward Health has been a leader in battling the number one killer in America, heart disease,” said Smith. “Our heart specialists have pioneered many diagnostic, medical and surgical lifesaving treatments for our patients. Now available locally, this advanced heart care will bring greater access to care closer to home.

“Broward Health Coral Springs’ new services are designed to meet the full spectrum our patients’ needs,” Smith concluded. “Our family of expert clinical staff – which includes more than 600 physicians – with our experienced leadership and volunteers provide advanced and compassionate care to all our patients, from our tiniest newborns to our revered seniors. Our passion for caring ensures that our patients can manage their health and return to the exceptional lifestyle South Florida affords.”
