And They Said It Couldn’t Be Done!
When we first began contemplating the birth of South Florida Hospital News and Healthcare Report only 8 short years ago, many friends and family greeted our venture as something closely akin to jumping off the edge of the Grand Canyon. Not that anyone was skeptical about the need for such a publication in South Florida, but most reservations were directed at the scenario of Charles (me) and Carol working in close quarters in a business that truly requires constant attention and interaction. Well, guess what … we’re still here!
Much like the past 41 years of our marriage, Carol and I have managed to construct a lifestyle wholly dependent upon having two completely different, yet complementary personalities. If ever there was a “glaring” example of yin and yang, it’s us.  Where I have never met a person I couldn’t strike up a conversation with, Carol is still waiting. Where I have never shied from public speaking or human interaction, Carol is still waiting. And where I have never thought twice about entering a Best Buy or CompUSA, Carol is sitting in the car reading. But you know the old adage, “She also serves who only stands and waits?” That is Carol to a T!
Because where Carol has never met a mess she couldn’t organize (even me); where she has never met a topic she couldn’t research; and where she has never failed to ensure we actually have a publication at the printer each month; I’m always the one surprised when she tells me this month’s issue already has been put to bed.
According to Carol, “The only thing more overrated than natural childbirth, is the joy of owning your own business.” (Or in our case, owning and operating SFHN&HR.) But seriously, it’s amazing to both of us that we’ve been doing this for 8 years, 96 issues, and we’re still working, quite literally, side by side every day, without bloodshed. Our desks are a mere ten feet apart. And while our monthly publication cycle means we’re basically like hamsters on a non-stop wheel, our business has given us innumerable benefits … most of all the colleagues, friends, and readers we’ve met along the way. Thanks to all of you!
