How to Win When It Comes To Patient Care

When it comes to sports, the best trained, best coached and best lead teams usually win. When it comes to patient care, it is no different. Over the next three months, we will dig into each area. For some reading this, it is just a check-up; you and your teams are doing a remarkable job in all three areas. For others, it may be more of a wakeup call or at least a bit of a gut check. Let’s start with your patient care focused training programs. Pull out your employee roster, and go down the list of everyone on your team who interacts with patients during their day. Two questions: How was their initial training or orientation? How is their ongoing training program? In some organizations (and their scores reflect it), new employees will spend up to four weeks focused on learning every aspect of the job including the importance of taking great care of the patient. All this is BEFORE they begin their new role. Afterwards ongoing training is chronicled to ensure they continue to receive additional knowledge specifically geared towards patient care. Ask an Exec. at one of these organizations how they can afford it and the quick response is something like: “We can’t afford not to.” At the end of the day, professional athletes constantly train to achieve desired results. All the natural talent in the world will not add up to anything without a solid training regimen. When an individual athlete or team wins, they know it would not have happened without great training and preparation. What we do is no different. We must take our talented professional and give them the training and support they need to win. If you have done a good job of hiring, now all you need to do is give them the training they want and deserve. Take a fresh look at your patient care training and make some tweaks if needed.
