Join Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to Raise Awareness of Breast Cancer Across South Florida

To honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center doctors, nurses, patients and staff will be prominently participating in South Florida community events throughout October to raise awareness of breast cancer, and let people know about the latest clinical research taking place at the cancer center.

At Sylvester, multidisciplinary teams of passionate cancer experts are discovering, developing and delivering the most effective ways to prevent, detect and cure cancer. By defining what is driving a patient’s unique tumor, Sylvester doctors develop and deliver personalized targeted treatments tailored to the patient’s specific cancer. The right diagnosis and targeted treatment delivered at the right time lead to better outcomes, more options, faster responses and fewer side effects.

According to data from the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women, yet breast cancer is less likely to be diagnosed at the earliest stage in Hispanic women compared to non-Hispanic women. There are currently more than two dozen breast cancer clinical trials available to patients at Sylvester, South Florida’s only Cancer Center of Excellence, as designated by the state of Florida.

During this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there are many ways the public can join Sylvester’s community efforts. Team Sylvester will be participating in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks on October 3 in Miami, October 24 in Boca Raton, and October 31 in Ft. Lauderdale. In addition, Sylvester will be the leading health care sponsor of Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure on October 17 in Miami. On October 17, the Hurricanes will play Virginia Tech in what will be the “Pink Game” to salute breast cancer survivors and highlight the lifesaving work done at Sylvester.
