Maureen Fagan Named UHealth's Chief Nursing Executive

November 19 2019 - Maureen Fagan, D.N.P., FNP-BC, FAAN, UHealth’s Chief Patient Experience Officer, has been named Chief Nursing Executive (CNE) for the entire health system.

UHealth—the University of Miami Health System previously had three chief nursing executives in decentralized roles — one for each hospital. After single licensure, which combined the health system’s three hospitals into one, UHealth determined that having one CNE with system-wide authority would bring greater leadership efficiency to the organization.

“Maureen has demonstrated great success in her current position,” said Edward Abraham, M.D., executive vice president for health affairs and CEO of UHealth. “As CNE, she will oversee hospital nursing leaders, as well as the patient experience function, providing strategy and synergy as we work toward achieving our Magnet nursing distinction goal.

Some of her most significant achievements have been:
Creating and implementing the infrastructure within the in-patient and ambulatory domains to enable establishment of the system-wide Office of Patient Experience
Sourcing best practice technology tools that simplify the grievance and complaint process and conduct pulse surveys to give staff immediate feedback from patients
Partnering with nursing, food service and environmental service staffs and leadership to raise UHealth Tower’s in-patient “likelihood to recommend” rank into the 75th percentile
As CNE, Fagan will continue to have great impact aligning and improving our patient experience and nursing services.

She joined UHealth in May 2018 after being recruited from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where she was Associate Chief Nurse for OB/GYN services at the Connors Center for Women and Newborns, and Executive Director of the Center for Patients and Families. Maureen began her career as a nurse practitioner in OB/GYN care before moving to the Chief of Nursing role at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. She earned a master of health administration degree and a doctorate of nursing practice, researching patient- and family-centered care globally. She was designated a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the highest national nursing distinction based on leadership and nursing excellence for her body of research and operational expertise in patient engagement. Fagan is a nationally recognized, invited speaker for annunciating the voices of patients and families.

In Fagan’s new role, she will also have responsibility for providing leadership, direction, and administration of direct patient care activities, including our ambulatory centers, oversight for our advanced practice providers (she holds American Nursing Association certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) and nursing education. She will add tremendous value to the leadership team as we continue building a culture focused on best-in-class patient experience, quality care and safety, employee engagement and fiscal responsibility.
