Memorial Foundations Reach New Levels of Giving

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation and Memorial Foundation received more than 10,000 contributions from individuals, businesses and organizations, as well as through special events, planned gifts and grants in FY 2008. The gifts and pledges totaled $13.9 million, more than twice that of the prior year, and the highest amount ever received by the Foundations in a single year. This was mainly due to the Capital Campaign to build the new Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the new Memorial Cancer Institute and expand the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute.

Capital Campaign

In FY 2008, new commitments to the Capital Campaign neared $9 million. A $3 million challenge grant from The Wasie Foundation was matched by a $3 million gift from Liat and Yizhak Toledano. In addition, there were three new campaign commitments of $500,000, one of $300,000 and 10 other gifts or pledges of $50,000 or more. The Campaign was officially launched at an October kickoff celebration with $24 million committed toward a goal of $36 million. The Memorial Healthcare System Physicians Campaign raised more than $2 million. Additional gifts and pledges during the year pushed the total support of the Capital Campaign past the $26.5 million mark at fiscal year end.

Special Events

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation special events, including the Memorial Classic, Conine All-Star Golf Classic and Diamond Angels Fairy Tale Ball, raised more than $1.8 million, an increase of 15 percent over the prior year. The 20th Annual Memorial Classic, consisting of a Memorabilia Auction and the Joe DiMaggio Legends Game, raised funds for the new pediatric oncology unit that will serve children and families coping with cancer. Funds raised from the Conine All-Star Golf Classic tournament underwrote expenses at the Conine Clubhouse, a home away from home where families of hospitalized children can stay free of charge. The Diamond Angels Fairy Tale Ball, a fundraiser that featured a day of golf, tennis and an evening gala, fulfilled its $1 million pledge toward the new pediatric oncology unit.

Planned Giving

Planned Gifts realized by the Foundations totaled $534,000. Additionally, 44 expectancies are on record through donors’ estate plans. These expectancies, or future estate gifts, have an estimated value of $2.2 million. The Foundations received notification of the largest estate planning gift in the history of the organizations, expected to exceed $1.6 million from bequests in the trusts of Vincent and Mildred Dellorto.

Foundation Partnerships

The Foundations continued strong relationships with several organizations, including Hyundai Hope on Wheels, which donated $40,000 for Pediatric Oncology for the third year in a row. The Memorial Regional Hospital Auxiliary focused on women’s health issues and donated more than $250,000 to the Memorial Foundation for the purchase of a mobile mammography van. The Foundations dedicated the Pediatric Trauma Center in the name of area motorcycle clubs that have contributed $1 million through the Toys in the Sun Run. New relationships have been established with The Batchelor Foundation and the Florida Panthers Foundation.
