Miami-Dade County Health Department – Three Time Governor’s Sterling Award Recipient

In 1997, the Miami-Dade County Health Department (MDCHD) adopted the into its performance management efforts the Sterling Criteria for Organizational Performance Excellence, a quality philosophy based on the nationally recognized Baldrige model. Designed to increase customer focus and organizational effectiveness, this model helps organizations determine current capabilities, strengths, and needed improvement in each of seven Baldrige areas: 1) Leadership, 2) Strategic Planning, 3) Customer Focus, 4) Workforce Focus, 5) Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management, 6) Operations Focus and 7) Results. The Florida Sterling Council recognizes all organizations that go through the management assessment process to make their organizations better.
Using this review structure helps the MDCHD and other Health departments in Florida assess their overall performance trends and improvement practices in health department services, community health and mortality indicators, contractor performance, financial performance, employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and other areas. Recently, the Governor's Sterling Award was given to the MDCHD for the third time in its 15 year journey. Lillian Rivera, Administrator for the MDCHD accepted the award along with a few representatives of the MDHCD workforce in Orlando early June 2012. "It is a great honor to celebrate this unprecedented accomplishment. This is the result of our workforce adopting and embracing a business model that has been proven to work over and over again in the private sector as well as the public sector", said Dr. Rivera as she graciously accepted the award. Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center also received this award at the in J.W. Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes.
MDCHD received its previous awards in 2002 and 2006. The MDCHD shares the pride of receiving a Governor’s Sterling Award with prestigious organizations in Miami-Dade such as South Miami Hospital, Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation and throughout the state, such as the City of Coral Springs and its peer county, St. John’s County Health Department.
