What Is Six Degrees of Separation?

Hi, my name is Charles and I think we all should wear masks. If not for yourself, wear a mask for your children, parents or grandparents, your neighbor’s newborn, the nice woman who stocks Publix shelves, as well as the millions of people you might never meet face-to-face. In today’s upside-down world, what was once considered empathy for community now equals social distancing. Remember the old six degrees of separation theory, where we’re all just six, or fewer, social connections away from each other. Well, that’s exactly what happens when anyone with or without symptoms innocently spreads a droplet or 2 of COVID-19 into the air. It’s sort of like when I used to try to play golf … you never could predict where my ball would land or what it would hit. (Although I did have an affinity for car windows!)

Do I like wearing a mask — of course not. My beard constantly itches, I have no idea if Elise at Palm Beach Bagel is glaring or smiling at me and to be honest, I barely recognize Carol half the time. But I also don’t feel like getting sick or making anyone else sick. So, if a piece of textile attached to my dumbo ears with elastic bands gives me and you a bit more protection, so be it. I’m in. What we all must remember is that right now, during a state of emergency aka COVID-19, our rights are only guaranteed to the point that we won’t harm someone else. For example, while you have the right to freedom of speech, you can’t walk into a crowded theater and scream “fire,” creating a danger to others. And in our similar situation today, you may have the right to not wear a mask in your own home, but you don’t have the right to expose others to a serious and possibly fatal illness out in public.

So, let’s keep it simple … wear the mask and maybe the only thing you’ll spread is a little good will.
