Publisher’s Note

Of Sugar and Spice and All Things Nice

Believe me when I tell you that after just a few short months of publishing South Florida Hospital News, I think of you, our readers, as friends. Even family.

So for the past few weeks I practically burst trying to hold in some news that my son Josh has finally given me permission to share with you: he and his wife, Kristen, who I adore as a daughter-in-law for many reasons, are having a baby. Their little girl, and our first grandchild, Mackenzie Caitlin, is scheduled to enter the world in late March.

The coronation will follow soon afterward. Keep your eye on the Society pages.

Seriously, though, becoming a grandfather for the first time is exciting enough; the fact that my first grandchild will be a little girl should prove to be a whole new delightful experience. My wife, Carol, will tell you, as a father to two sons, I was always a pushover. Now I’ll be a … well, what’s easier than a pushover? A puff-over?

Tell the truth—would you say I’m excited about the prospects of being a granddad? Boy, and I thought giving birth to South Florida Hospital News was exciting

I mentioned my daughter-in-law briefly but let me say that part of my unbridled enthusiasm for this upcoming blessed event has to do with my relationship with Kristen. Simply put, she’s the kind of young lady every dad hopes his son will marry. And as if that wasn’t enough, Carol and I actually like Kristen’s parents, so it’s not likely we’ll be engaged in "dueling grandparents." (Although, for the record, and should Mackenzie ever read this, we really do plan to buy you a pony.)

Regular readers of my publisher’s notes know I am addicted to shopping and since hearing of my granddaughter’s imminent arrival, I have kicked my habit into overdrive. Pink has become my favorite color, and we’re well past purchasing the essentials. Should we face another Y2K threat, this princess won’t have to leave the nursery for months. With Josh’s help, I already finished putting the crib together—in record time, and even up to Carol’s considerably high standards.

The photography equipment is all tested and ready, with enough film and backup power sources to cover Voyager’s decades-long exploration of outer space.

All we need now is for Mackenzie to arrive. Stay tuned.
