Networking 411

To network, or not to network: that is the question.
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous lack of fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of economic troubles.
- With apologies to William Shakespeare

And what is the official “Charles Solution” to most business problems? NETWORK of course!

Several years ago (on these very pages), I noted how Carol tends to push the envelope and use really big words around me. (In the early years of our marriage, I tried to look them up in the dictionary, relying on Webster’s to communicate with my wife! But after 43 years of marriage, my blank stare usually elicits a basic definition from her.) Anyway, that day the particular word she used to describe me was “ubiquitous” – because I try to be everywhere, meet everyone AND anyone, and I’m always trying to figure out ways to link all these folks together into one big NETWORK!

Well as an offshoot of this philosophy, 4 years ago our very own South Florida Healthcare Networking Group (SFHNG) was born and we’re still going strong. An offshoot of South Florida Hospital News & Healthcare Report, each month this varied, ever-changing group of approximately 50 healthcare professionals and affiliates comes together for a morning meeting at one of our area hospitals for some 21st century business speed-dating. No compulsory membership fees or big speeches, we just get together, introduce ourselves, and of course – eat donuts! And yes, I am happy to report that deals have been brokered, new jobs have been secured, and business relationships have been developed. (Carol says if any of our participants get married, she is immediately reporting me to!)

Hopefully you were among the many that joined us last week at Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach. For October, we move south and we’ll meet up at Coral Gables Hospital on Thursday, October 23. To receive announcements about our SFHNG monthly breakfast meetings, email me at

I wish I could say, “The more the merrier, because that isn’t always the case.” Although we originally cut off attendance at 75, we’ve since realized 50 eager beavers is a much more manageable group. So 50 is the magic number! I apologize to all we turn away each month – but get your registrations in early and maybe your perfect business match is just a meeting away.

And if you think it’s too hard to get up that morning … think about the donuts!
