Publisher’s Note - A Bit of Peace

My Dad was a member of that "Greatest Generation" we hear so much about these days. Ten days ago, I would have said "he is a member" — his passing is that recent. And as much of an enigma as he was during life, much was revealed about him as my siblings and I sat Shiva for him last week. Going through old papers and photos, long hidden from all of us, we learned about his childhood, a complicated web of tenuous family ties and history. We finally began to understand his unspoken war years, illustrated by the pictures he took as a fledgling photographer in boot camp, during the long Atlantic journey, and finally liberating the camps in Europe. We found his secret stash of cash, ready for his next toss of the dice in Biloxi. But most importantly, I think the mere act of us all being together, laughing over his maddening idiosyncrasies of which he had many, enabled us all to find a bit of peace with his passing.
