When It Comes to Patient Care - Focus on Unique “Options”

When it comes to cars, most folks are not that picky. Reliable, Comfortable, Quality, Value, and Safety are what many seem to look for.

I recently started kicking the tires figuratively and literally with the idea of getting something new. The bells and whistles today are amazing.
However, when every car seems to have the same “cool” options, it is far less impressive. If it has push button start, a high tech display, or Bluetooth /WiFi, our reaction nowadays is one of ‘no big deal’ (despite what the sales rep. will try to tell us). These may have been cool five years ago, but now, ho-hum. However, what always impresses people is true innovation.
When we think, ‘no one else has this … yet’. Eventually others will copy the idea, but it is always exciting to see something new and original. The same is true for patient care and the competitive landscape to impress patients and their families.
If you want to win in the marketplace, avoid trying to be the same. Instead, once you have provided all of the ‘options’ that everyone else has, look for something that will set your organization apart.
Since we have a car theme going, many years ago, someone got the great idea of offering free valet parking at hospitals, however, now it is unusual not to see it. Point is, what was innovative yesterday, is common today and will become the basic expectation in the future. Challenge your team to think differently than the others. Benchmarking your competition is great, but it can also limit creativity and differentiation.
Try to come up with one cool new option for your patients and their family per month – it doesn’t have to cost anything, just be unique in the market. The difference is what impresses people and what can make you a leader at what you do.
