Nexus University: Programs Designed for Career Building

With significant experience as a Vice President of Academics in other institutions, Janie Bailey, Director of School of Health Sciences and Nursing was enticed by the Nexus opportunity to build an exceptional nursing leadership program. She draws from her own education experience earning her PhD, MSN, MS and RN and focuses the Nexus RN to BSN programming on flexibility for those with their professional nursing licenses. The licensed registered nurse or associate degree or diploma nurse can earn a baccalaureate degree in three sequential semesters. The online format provides the flexibility for those who need to do their coursework after they complete their 8-hour workday, whether that is at 5 pm or 3 am. The online program provides 24/7 tech support and current technology providing individual attention from faculty within a cohort format in classes for academic qualifications.

 

Additionally, there is a physical campus with a computer access lab, study rooms, nursing labs, open spaces and a cafeteria for those who need to get out of the house or workplace to study and meet with classmates on projects.

 

According to Dr. Bailey, the cohort discussion learning is based on practice not just theory. Evidence-based learning from bedside and clinic experience is designed to improve care and implement change. Staff and students incorporate it into every class project. Additionally, the student population reflects community diversity and faculty applies evidence-based teaching methods to prepare students to deal with the cultural diversity they are sure to encounter during their careers.

 

In addition to the evidence-based online and cohort academic learning background, there is an 8-week community clinical experience provided in clinics, healthcare facilities or medical offices to ensure that students can translate their current theoretical framework in an actual patient care setting including unique aspects of mental health, correctional institutions or travel nursing. This also is a win-win teaching experience providing fresh nursing ideas and supervised professional care to the community while building the hands-on credentials students need to practice their nursing and ancillary skills in real time environments and situations.

 

Nexus also provides a Master of Science in Nursing to prepare practicing nurses to fulfill a clinical nurse leader role. The program is 36 semester credit hours with 400 clinical hours and can be completed in five sequential semesters. Upon completion, the graduate is eligible for the Clinical Nurse Certification exam.

 

Nurses, many of whom completed training 20 or 30 years ago, often seek to blend their clinical nursing familiarity with business skills vital to advancing in their profession. When they land leadership opportunities, they are immersed in a full repertoire of responsibilities beyond direct patient care.

 

Dr. Bailey explained, “Leadership issues include policy making for ethics, finance, informatics and research. Our students matriculate through programs that are designed to build these talents. Nexus is very proud of our commitment to one-on-one faculty/student interaction, so graduates are prepared with listening, cultural sensitivity and business leadership skills to enhance the patient care delivery system where they work.”

 

Jessica Suito, Director of Finance and Operations, echoed Bailey’s enthusiasm. “As a young organization, Nexus faculty and staff are receptive to new ideas in health care education. All classes are conducted in English but all support services are bi-lingual. We are planning to expand course offerings and targeting in the future to include ancillary health services and Emergency Medical Services technicians to enhance their proficiency and aptitude in their quest for career advancement,” she said.

 

In addition to the School of Health Sciences and Nursing, Nexus also includes a School of Business granting bachelor and master degrees in the theories and practices of the modern business world. Nexus University is licensed by the Florida Commission for Independent Education and, as a branch campus of UMayor, is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
