Holy Cross Hospital opened Phase I of the new Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center at Holy Cross HealthPlex offering services in a healing, spa-like environment. The Jeane M. Dorini Women’s Imaging and Diagnostic Suite serves as the nucleus, offering advanced breast imaging including digital mammography, minimally invasive diagnostic procedures, stereotactic breast biopsy, bone density studies and ultrasonography.

 

Holy Cross also garnered international acclaim when the first advanced sensor assisted knee surgery in the world was performed at the hospital. According to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Martin Roche, Past Chief of Orthopedics at Holy Cross Hospital, whose team performed the surgery, the advanced sensors allow surgeons to obtain improved soft tissue balance and patient specific kinematics, which is good news for the 600,000 patients who undergo knee replacement surgery each year.

 

Dr. Laszlo Miskolczi, an internationally acclaimed board certified interventional neuroradiologist at Holy Cross, was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to study and teach stroke treatment using the new technology of the Phillips Allura Xper FD20/20 which can increase the treatment window up to eight hours, making it possible to treat stroke victims who arrive too late for intravenous therapy. The breakthrough CT technology at Holy Cross included the Philips Brillance iCT 256-slice scanner, available for the first time in the state, where the exact time of stroke can be estimated and brain areas that can be recovered with intervention can be mapped in the case of SOA (stroke on awakening) patients.

 

As part of its continuing commitment to excellence in cardiac services, Holy Cross Medical Group added 18 distinguished cardiovascular specialists who provide comprehensive cardiac services at the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Center and spur leading-edge research through the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Research Institute, both at Holy Cross, enhancing the level of comprehensive cardiac and electrophysiology services. The Institute was one of a few sites nationwide participating in novel trials using adult stem cells, and this year, Holy Cross and the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston entered into an agreement to collaborate on expanding oncology services and access to clinical trials to South Florida residents.

 

The hospital is also constantly expanding its participation in Stage I, II and III clinical trials, including a clinical trial for people with Hodgkin lymphoma, anaplastic T-cell lymphoma or other lymphomas that are positive for the CD-30 marker. Holy Cross also enrolled the first patient in a worldwide clinical trial of a new treatment for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have exhausted all other options for treatment; and the hospital is currently enrolling people with severe Parkinson’s disease in a clinical trial of a medication that is administered in a similar way to an insulin pump to provide continuous dosing.

Beginning January 1, 2011, Holy Cross Hospital will send home every newborn decked out in a specially designed onesie as part of the City of Fort Lauderdale’s 100th birthday. The specially designed white onesie features the Holy Cross and Centennial Celebration logo.
