BCMA – The Broward County Medical Association

 

The BCMA has had a positive impact on physician’s practices and the community through outreach programs and other services. Specifically, we provide a FREE referral service for patients to our member physicians.  We also maintain a speaker’s bureau to provide community organizations with the most up to date medical information from our member physicians.

 

The BCMA also maintains community involvement with a number of local governmental and private organizations in Broward County, to include the following:

• Florida Department of Health in Broward County – HPV Vaccine Strategic Educational Meeting

•United Way Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse, Board of Governors, includes  Sanford Silverman, MD (current BCMA president), and Cynthia Peterson, BCMA Executive Vice President

Projects include: Prescription Drug Monitoring Program; Naloxone overdose prevention; FLAKKA Task Force Meetings held at BCMA Office; New Advocacy Committee on a Broward Needle Exchange Program.

• South Florida Medical Group Management Association. Cynthia Peterson, Board of Directors collaborating on Annual Symposium “How to Play the New Healthcare Game and Win”  Sept 12, 2015

• Women Physician’s Group which holds meetings and honors Women In Distress, American Lung Association, Mental Health Associations, American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society.

• South Florida Medical Assistants Chapter; Educational meetings held at the BCMA Office

• The Physician Assistants Programs from Barry University, Keiser University, and Nova Southeastern University have representatives on the BCMA Board of Directors  

• Medical Students and Residents attend the BCMA  Board of Directors meetings from Florida Atlantic University and Nova Southeastern University

• The BCMA board of directors have academic appointments as Affiliate Assistant Professors of Clinical Biomedical Science at Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL

 

The BCMA holds monthly educational meetings for the physicians and their staff on a variety of subjects each month to include Medicare updates, ICD-10, HIPPA, Employment Laws, and practice management.

 

One of our greatest accomplishments over the past few years has been the Women Physician Section.  Three meetings are held each year during which a non-profit organization is honored.  The networking events have a great turnout of women and are underwritten by different sponsors.

 

The BCMA has taken positions on current health care issues. They include but are not limited to:

• Supporting Medicaid expansion in the state of Florida

• Modifying office surgery rules to maintain safety for patients but allow cost effective office-based procedures provided by physicians for their patients

• Supporting pharmacy access for patients who have difficulty finding pain medications for chronic and acute pain conditions

 

The BCMA supports physicians and their staff in the practice of medicine which is changing rapidly.  The community also benefits from our relationships with various organizations. The public can access our website at www.BCMA.com  where they can find a physician, arrange to have a speaker for their organization, or just try to get help in our ever changing complex healthcare environment.
