As part of its commitment to nursing, Palm Healthcare Foundation, Inc. through its Healthcare Workforce Partnership Employer Initiatives committee offers a countywide Preceptor Training program. A favorable preceptorship can have a positive impact on nurse recruitment and retention resulting in cost savings. A preceptor serves as a role model, educator, and to socialize new nurses hired by a facility, whether students, new graduate nurses, or experienced nurses new to the facility. Most are not relieved of any work duties in exchange for their precepting work. Competency validation completed during the preceptorship period ensures staff meets the JCAHO requirements for staff qualifications and to ensure patient safety.
To earn the Palm Healthcare Foundation Preceptor of Excellence designation, nurses are first selected by supervisors to attend an all day workshop facilitated by expert faculty on topics such as the preceptor roles, strategies to teach adult learners, performance evaluation, and how to resolve potential preceptor problems. The nurse then serves as a preceptor and after earning excellent ratings on the self, preceptee, and supervisor evaluation tools and attending two follow-up continuing education breakfasts, is awarded the Preceptor of Excellence designation and honored in an award ceremony. Facilities pay the nurses to attend the training sessions. The preceptor training costs are funded by the Palm Healthcare Foundation, Inc.
