The keen wisdom that comes from several decades of living was a major draw for Dr. Regina Marranzini when she chose a medical career in geriatrics.
As a geriatrician, she feels that her patients have so much to offer her. Now, as Medical Director of the new Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) unit at Memorial Regional Hospital South in Hollywood, she will have even more to offer them.
“The goal of the ACE unit is to provide interdisciplinary care to geriatric patients, helping them to maintain the functional status they had prior to their hospital stay,” explained Dr. Marranzini. Besides herself, the ACE team includes specially-trained nurses, physical therapists, nutritionists, recreational therapy, social workers and pharmacists.
Dr. Marranzinis extensive background in geriatrics has prepared her well for this role. She has done research on a variety of topics such as home health care, malnutrition and the elderly, nursing home care and stem cell use for osteoporosis. Most recently, she had an outpatient practice in Tamarac, FL, where more than 90% of her population was geriatrics.
Dr. Marranzini has also served as assistant professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicines Florida Atlantic University campus in Boca Raton and was a research assistant at Harvard Medical Schools Gerontology Division at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA.
Dr. Marranzini holds a B.S. degree from Davidson College in Davidson, NC, and a medical degree from the Medical University of the Americas in Nevis, West Indies. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center and served as Chief Resident. Following that, she did her fellowship in Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
