On any given day at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, you may have the pleasure of interacting with one of the 500 volunteers who continually give so much of their time and service to our veterans. Each day as many as 100 different volunteers are busy providing our veterans with information on appointments, where a clinic is located, directing them to the out-patient pharmacy or making a phone call to assure their transportation needs are met. This is just a routine part of our volunteers assignments who serve as Customer Service Ambassadors. These volunteers are one of the first welcoming faces one will see when entering the medical center. This year we celebrate the volunteer commitment with the theme “Volunteers Build a Better World” and there is no doubt that the 113,000 hours of volunteer hours for 2009 reflected that genuine commitment of caring and support for our veterans.
Volunteers work in a variety of assignments and one can see the benefits of their support when a patient needs to have lab specimen delivered to another clinic, or a patient wants someone to brighten their day when they walk around the Community Living Center with a cart full of snacks and healthy treats and beverages to off-set some of those times one gets hungry in between meals. Other volunteers are always busy working in the Fisher House where they make the family members of some of our veterans traveling far distances feel comfortable while their loved one undergoes a medical procedure or extended clinical treatment. You will also find our volunteer force working on “Personal Hygiene/ Welcome Kits” for all our newly admitted patients to have the necessary toiletry items to ensure their stay is as comfortable as possible. One may even see the volunteers walking around delivering magazines and other reading material which provides an increased quality of life for our hospitalized veterans. West Palm Beach VA Medical Center is very fortunate to have an extensive volunteer work force that brings many wonderful experiences to Americas Heroes, our Veterans. We are grateful for their continuous support and appreciate all that each volunteer brings to the Medical Center every day.
