July 9, 2024 –Good Samaritan Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center, both part of the Palm Beach Health Network, are recognized by the State of Florida for reducing the rate of unnecessary cesarean sections(C-sections) for low-risk births. The hospitals are being honored by the Florida Department of Health and the Agency for Health Care Administration. At a recent Florida Hospital Association Quality Conference, they both received the 2022 Award for Excellence in Maternity Care.
To be eligible for this award, the hospitals must stay within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2030 goal of NTSV (Nulliparous, Term, Singleton, Vertex) cesarean birth target rate of 23.6 percent or less.

When women have already undergone a C-section, they will likely have to repeat the process for the next pregnancy to avoid any further complications. Having multiple cesarean births increases other risks and long-term complications including placenta accreta and placenta previa. NTSV C-sections conditions are for low-risk, first time mothers. It is important to keep this particular birth rate down due to potential risks. Vaginal births will have less complications especially for mothers planning on having more children.
