September 28, 2024 – Miami, FL — The Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) proudly hosted its first-ever Annual Health Fair, a free event open to the public, on Saturday, September 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Held at the Jose Marti Gym in Little Havana, the fair was made possible with the generous support of Miami-Dade County District 5 Commissioner, Eileen Higgins. Volunteer physicians, residents, and medical students united to offer valuable health information and resources to the community, with a special focus on underserved populations.
This inaugural event covered a wide range of medical topics and resources, including preventive health screenings, nutrition advice, blood pressure monitoring, diabetes management, mental health awareness, and women’s health services. Attendees also had access to vaccination services, thanks to the Comprehensive Health Center Mobile Unit, generously provided by Dr. Rudolph Moise and his dedicated staff.
Commissioner Eileen Higgins expressed her gratitude for the collaboration with DCMA, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful to the DCMA for their ongoing commitment to bringing much-needed health services to our community, especially to those who need it the most” said Commissioner Eileen Higgins. “This Health Fair in District 5’s Little Havana is a perfect example of how working together can truly make a difference in people’s lives. Thank you to the DCMA, our neighborhood partners, and volunteers for your dedication and partnership in improving public health.”
Dr. Patricia Ares-Romero, President of the DCMA, emphasized the significance of the Health Fair for the Miami-Dade community, saying, “These events are critical in bridging gaps in healthcare access, particularly for our underserved populations. Our physicians and medical students work tirelessly to ensure that every resident has the opportunity to receive essential care, and I am deeply proud of their dedication to the Hippocratic Oath.”
The concept for the Health Fair was first championed by medical student Shantell Steele, whose vision and persistence over the past year brought the event to life. Steele’s leadership and dedication reflect the DCMA’s mission to foster collaboration and community engagement among future healthcare leaders.
In addition to the support from Commissioner Higgins, the DCMA extends heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who made this event possible. Special recognition goes to Dr. Rudolph Moise for his invaluable contribution of the Comprehensive Health Center Mobile Unit, which was a cornerstone of the fair’s success.
