While there have been many important mentors during Vera Burke Marshall’s 24-year career at Memorial Healthcare System, her journey to becoming a leader started long before that, at home with her Jamaican parents and grandfather.

“They were resilient and steadfast in their life journey, and I’ll always value the lessons I learned,” said Burke Marshall, director of Emergency Services at Memorial Hospital Miramar. “They taught me to be a lifelong learner, to care about people, have integrity and faith, work hard, and be committed to any position I’m in.”

Burke Marshall cites the opening of Memorial Miramar as a career highlight. Now, more than two decades later, she is proud of what the hospital has become, including earning primary stroke certification, having an autism-certified pediatric emergency room, and receiving the Pinnacle Award for service.
