Designation recognizes the highest level of stroke care and arrives during National Stroke Awareness Month
May 25, 2026 — Mount Sinai Medical Center has been awarded Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification by DNV for the stroke program at its Harvey R. Chaplin Family Stroke & Chest Pain Center, building on the medical center’s established record as a nationally recognized stroke center and affirming its capacity to deliver the highest level of competence for the treatment of serious and complex stroke events.
Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification is the highest tier of stroke care recognition available, signaling that an institution has the personnel, infrastructure, protocols, and clinical outcomes required to manage the most complex stroke cases, including those requiring advanced neuro- interventional procedures, around the clock.
“This certification reaffirms the standard we hold across every service line at Mount Sinai. Stroke care has long been a cornerstone of our clinical programs, and this latest recognition confirms what our patients can count on: care at the highest national level, without leaving South Florida,” said Gino R. Santorio, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Medical Center.
DNV’s Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification is built on standards from the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association® and affirms that a medical center delivers the full spectrum of stroke care, from diagnosis and treatment to rehabilitation and education, with clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.
“Achieving certification shows commitment to excellence,” said Kelly Proctor, President of DNV Healthcare USA Inc. “It helps demonstrate to your community that you are performing at the highest level.”
Mount Sinai Medical Center’s stroke program operates from The Harvey R. Chaplin Family Stroke and Chest Pain Center and is supported by a multidisciplinary team of vascular neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-interventional radiologists, neuro-critical care specialists, emergency medicine physicians, rehabilitation specialists, and dedicated nursing staff. The program offers advanced therapies including intravenous thrombolytic treatment, mechanical thrombectomy, and complex cerebrovascular interventions.
The recognition arrives during National Stroke Awareness Month, observed every May, when the American Stroke Association calls attention to stroke as a leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States.
