The Pediatric Oncology Unit at the Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital was previously a post-cardiac adult trauma center with dull paint peeling off the walls and patients stuffed in rooms with nothing to do. These immunocompromised patients had little chance of interaction, and most were kept in isolation. Unfortunately, the only opportunity of entertainment was provided by a tiny, worn-out table stacked with outdated games and puzzles. This environment significantly contributed to the agony that they were already withstanding.
The American Heritage Pre-Medical Society had been previously able to volunteer in the unit, and their members were consistently witnessing this tragedy first-hand. This absolutely heartbreaking situation motivated them to create a certified 501(c)3 nonprofit called the A Road for the Cure Foundation run completely by high school students. After fundraising for several years, their foundation was successfully able to transform the unit’s measly stack of board games to a welcoming $250,000 playroom. The playroom is replete with an Xbox, Playstation, and cupboards full of board games and toys for children of all ages to enjoy. They continuously strive to improve the conditions of the unit to create an exemplary model of treatment that pediatric cancer patients rightfully deserve.
They hold several annual events throughout the year, such as their 5K for a Better Day, Superhero Party, and Holiday Party. At the Holiday Party the students purchase all of the gifts on the patients’ Christmas lists with what they have fundraised from October to December. Their officers meet to wrap up all of the gifts and put them in personalized Santa bags for each and every child. At the Holiday Party, every child is able to come up and unwrap their presents on stage with Santa. All of their incredible members get to watch every kid light up with excitement as they unwrap gifts they never thought they’d be able to have. This truly exemplifies the heart and soul of their organization, doing something to spark joy in the patients and their families during such a hard time in their lives.
On October 19, 2019, A Road for the Cure Foundation will be hosting its 5th Annual Gala themed "A Night in Spain” at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott in Coral Springs, FL! The event is projected to have at least 150 guests, raising money for a 100% donation to the pediatric oncology unit at Broward Health. All donations will be used to furnish the new playroom in the pediatric oncology unit, expand the services of the pediatric oncology unit to serve more children, acquire new equipment for patient care, and provide much-needed support to patients and families. The gala will have a silent and live auction, gourmet dinner, and live entertainment.
