The Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) has designated Broward Health Medical Center (BHMC) a statutory teaching hospital, a significant step for the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program in its mission to train expert physicians practicing in Broward County and throughout Florida. The designation, announced to the hospital in a letter from AHCA, validates the efforts of BHMC GME faculty and staff to ensure its residency programs provide graduates with the skills needed to provide world-class healthcare in the 21st century. 

 

The designation comes as part of BHMC’s long-term strategic plan to expand the GME residency program. The BHMC GME program has nearly doubled the number of residents in training since 2010, placing them into practices throughout the state of Florida and within the Broward Health system.

BHMC GME began working towards the statutory teaching hospital designation in 2010 with the expansion of its internal medicine program, the start of programs in pediatrics, geriatrics the development of a cardiology fellowship. 

 

The GME program at BHMC trains medical students and upon graduation from their medical programs, complete their residency training at BHMC. The newly employed residents are trained by BHMC expert physicians. Since 2005 alone the GME program has graduated more than 200 residents, with more than 120 providing healthcare to citizens in the state of Florida and 55 practicing within Broward County. A total of 28 former residents have privileges at a Broward Health facility.
