July 9, 2021 –  Trinity Health today announced effective immediately, the national health system will require all colleagues, clinical staff, contractors and those conducting business in its health care facilities be vaccinated against COVID-19. 
 
The requirement applies to Trinity Health’s more than 117,000 employees in 22 states nationwide in an effort stop to the spread of the virus and keep all patients, colleagues and the broader communities safe. This includes 2,900 Holy Cross Health colleagues.
 
Since December 2020, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first vaccine for Emergency Use Authorization, Trinity Health has strongly encouraged vaccination for all colleagues and within the communities its various Health Ministries serve. To date, the health system estimates nearly 75% of Trinity Health employees have already received at least one dose of the vaccine, and it now looks to close the gap with this new requirement. 
 
"Our Core Value of Safety means we have the responsibility to do more as a health care system. We strongly believe that this is the right thing to do for our patients and our colleagues," said Mark Doyle, president and chief executive officer.
 
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate more than 331 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the U.S. The vaccines have proven to be safe and effective against symptomatic infections, hospitalizations and death with more than 99% of COVID-19 deaths today occurring in unvaccinated people. 
 
"Vaccine protects against transmission so the more we vaccinate, the more we decrease chances of ‘escape variant’ against which the vaccines would not work," said Jose Lopez, MD, chief medical officer. "There is urgency to get as many people as possible vaccinated before the fall and winter.”
 
Employees at Trinity Health and its Health Ministries must meet a series of rolling deadlines, with most locations requiring them to submit proof of vaccination by Sept. 21, 2021. It has not yet been determined if a COVID-19 vaccine booster will be required annually, but if so, employees will also need to submit proof of the booster as needed. 
 
Exemptions are available for religious or health reasons and must be formally requested, documented and approved. Employees who do not meet criteria for exemption and fail to show proof of vaccination will have their employment terminated.

July 9 2021 – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County is offering appointments for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson’s Jannsen COVID-19 vaccine. The Pfizer BioNTech vaccine is available to individuals 12 years of age and older while the Johnson & Johnson’s Jannsen vaccine is available to individuals 18 years of age and older. The vaccines will be offered by appointment at the following locations:

All individuals under the age of 18 receiving a vaccine must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must complete the COVID-19 vaccine screening and consent form.
 
 
As per State Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees’ Public Health Advisory issued on April 29, 2021, vaccine access and eligibility is expanded to any individual in Florida who is present in Florida for the purpose of providing goods or services for the benefit of residents and visitors of the state.

July 1 2021 – Madison Workman is the Chief Operating Officer at North Shore Medical Center. In this role, Workman is responsible for the daily operations and implementation of strategic initiatives for the 337-bed acute care facility. He has led hospital wide initiatives to increase employee engagement, decrease costs and numerous equipment & infrastructure upgrades.
 
He is also the Group Chief Operating Officer for the Tenet Miami-Dade Market consisting of five acute care facilities. In this role he leads the group to standardize best practices, drive operational efficiencies and reduce costs across the market. 
 
Workman served as the Chief Operating Officer at sister facility, Coral Gables Hospital where he led and completed various construction and operational projects such as a 12,600 square foot off-campus emergency department, new MRI unit, CT replacement, DaVinci robot acquisitions and over 60 patient room renovations to name a few.  During his tenure, Coral Gables Hospital won the Tenet Circle of Excellence Award, a top recognition for service and quality from the hospital’s parent company, and the hospital placed top 10 in the company for patient satisfaction.

Jay and Azize Grunin will be Recognized with the Naming of the Conference and Education Center
 
July 8, 2021 – Through his Foundation, new Boca Raton resident Jay Grunin has made a gift of $3 million to Keeping the Promise…The Campaign for Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The Grunin Foundation joins many other seven-plus figure donors in support of the hospital’s long-term vision. The gift brings the total raised for the campaign to an astounding $208 million, surging toward a goal of $250 million.

The new Conference and Education Center will be located on the first floor off the main lobby. The new Center will house state-of-the- art video conferencing and other communication technologies. This Center will be widely used by administration, employees and physicians. When available, the much-needed conference space can be utilized for Boca Regional community-based programs and educational offerings, as well as continuing education classes. Additionally, the Center will connect Boca Regional professionals with other leaders and experts nationally and internationally.
 
Keeping the Promise is the largest campaign in Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s history and is supporting its most ambitious period of growth and expansion. The campus redevelopment plans include at the centerpiece, the new Gloria Drummond Patient Tower where patients will be welcomed in the inviting new Louis B. and Anne W. Green Lobby with plans for retail, dining, meeting space, a sanctuary, outdoor courtyards and other conveniences for visitors. building, all existing rooms will be converted to private in a comprehensive renovation of all patient units including maternity, oncology, and orthopedics. An expansion of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute is well underway with emphasis on neurovascular/stroke, central nervous system tumors, spine, and epilepsy/seizure disorders. The recently opened 972-car Schmidt Family Parking Facility will be connected to the Marcus Neuroscience Institute once the new tower construction is complete. Also included in the plans is the new Toby and Leon Cooperman Pavilion, to be located across the street from the medical campus with an outpatient surgery center, physician offices and adjacent parking. These investments are the initial steps toward an even broader vision for the campus with greater access points and even more specialties.

July 7, 2021 – The Lee Health Foundation has awarded the very first Barbara’s Friends Scholarships to two local high school seniors. This scholarship is designed to allow childhood cancer survivors and children battling blood disorders to pursue their academic goals without financial burden. 
 
Receiving this year’s Barbara’s Friends Scholarships are Michelle Glarum and Mallory Rice. Michelle, a senior at North Fort Myers High School is living with sickle cell disease. Mallory is a brain cancer survivor and student at Cypress Lake High School. Both Michelle and Mallory will receive full four-year scholarships to the college of their choice. Both students are looking at Florida colleges. The scholarships are administered through the Southwest Florida Community Foundation.
 
“Pediatric cancer patients and their families face personal and financial hardships that impact them for the rest of their lives. We created this scholarship to give these survivors the ability to follow their dreams without their families worrying about how to pay for college. Michelle and Mallory are exceptional young women, and I hope these scholarships help them accomplish all of their academic and professional goals,” said Dr. Emad Salman, Regional Medical Officer at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. 
 
Michelle plans to attend State College of Florida Bradenton with a goal of becoming an occupational therapist. She says growing up with Sickle Cell she wants to help others overcome their challenges and obstacles in living with pain and share her lifelong learnings of coping with her own blood disorder to help others.
 
 
Mallory plans to start her college career at Florida Southwestern State College and wants to go into the education field, helping children with special needs. 
 
These two scholarships were made possible by generous donations from Lexington Country Club and Madisen’s Match, a celebrity tennis tournament fundraiser.
