Funding will support the Barbara’s Friends Scholarship Program, providing full-ride college scholarships to childhood cancer and blood disorder survivors
October 23, 2025 – Barbara’s Friends has received a $25,000 grant from the Daniel R. & Anne M. Harper Foundation to support the Barbara’s Friends Scholarship Program, helping childhood cancer and blood disorder survivors pursue higher education.
Since 1995, Barbara’s Friends has provided life-saving care and hope to more than 12,000 children and young adults treated for cancer and blood disorders at Golisano Children’s Hospital. The scholarship program extends care beyond treatment, empowering survivors to continue their education and follow their dreams, regardless of financial barriers.
“This grant from the Harper Foundation makes it possible for us to give young survivors a fresh start after years of treatment,” said Justin Brand, director of development for Lee Health Foundation. “Our scholars are proof that diagnoses don’t define their future but inspires it. Many go on to study nursing, medicine, and other fields where they can help others the way they were once helped.”
To date, 10 Barbara’s Friends scholars are pursuing degrees across Florida and beyond, with more than half studying in healthcare-related fields. Each year, three full scholarships are awarded through a partnership with the Collaboratory, which administers the application, selection, and funding process.
