June 30 ,2026 – Every June, Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month brings renewed attention to the brain, one of the most complex and least understood organs in the human body. We wear purple, share stories and recognize the millions of families affected by neurological disease. But awareness is only the beginning. Lasting progress comes from what happens next: research, technology, clinical innovation and the investment required to move care forward.

In South Florida, that work is well underway every day at Memorial Healthcare System, where the growth of the Memorial Neuroscience Institute reflects both advances in medicine and the role philanthropy can play in accelerating them.

Few people understand that journey better than Christopher DeMassi, MD, chief of adult neurosurgery, medical director of the Spine Center, and chief of the Memorial Neuroscience Institute.  When Dr. DeMassi joined Memorial 15 years ago, the neuroscience program was relatively modest in scope. Today, it has grown into one of the region’s leading centers for brain and spine care, treating patients with conditions ranging from stroke and epilepsy to some of the most complex neurological disorders.

“The program has exploded over the last decade,” Dr. DeMassi says.

Under his leadership, the institute has expanded across nearly every area of brain and spine care, including adult and pediatric neurosurgery, comprehensive stroke services, advanced epilepsy treatment, neurointerventional radiology and neuropsychology.

The expansion comes at a time when neurological diseases are touching more lives than ever. Alzheimer’s disease affects nearly seven million Americans, while millions more live with Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, traumatic brain injuries and other neurological conditions.

At the same time, neuroscience is one of medicine’s most promising frontiers.

“I don’t see any other specialty, other than maybe cancer, where the potential for innovation is limitless,” Dr. DeMassi says. “The brain is extremely complex, and there’s still so much we don’t fully understand.”

As a physician, Dr. DeMassi sees firsthand how philanthropy helps close the gap between what is available today and what may be possible tomorrow. Several years ago, donor support through the Memorial Foundation helped fund an advanced surgical robot used in epilepsy procedures. This technology allows surgeons to reach deep areas of the brain through openings only millimeters wide.

Dr. DeMassi recalls one young woman who lived with daily seizures for years. Following surgery, she was seizure-free. “She’s living a normal life today because of that technology,” he says.

Stories like hers demonstrate how donor support can bring new technology and treatment options to patients sooner. Through the Memorial Foundation and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, philanthropy helps fund equipment, expand programs and support innovation that might otherwise take years longer to reach the community.

“Core funding supports day-to-day operations and essential clinical services, but advancing care often depends on philanthropic support that allows us to go further and faster,” said Dr. DeMassi. “That’s what accelerates new treatments and expands access for more patients.”

Among Memorial’s future priorities is the addition of an intraoperative MRI, which allows surgeons to obtain detailed imaging during procedures without moving patients out of the operating room. The system is used at many leading neuroscience centers because it can improve precision during complex brain surgeries.

Other priorities include expanding clinical research, increasing participation in clinical trials and continuing to recruit highly specialized physicians and scientists.

The need extends beyond technology as well. As demand for neuroscience services grows, Memorial faces many of the same challenges confronting healthcare systems nationwide, including limited space and growing demand for specialized care. Expanding infrastructure would allow more patients to access advanced neurological treatment closer to home.

“My goal is for us to be a dedicated neuroscience destination where physicians, researchers, therapists and support services all work together in one place, focused entirely on brain and spine care,” Dr. DeMassi says. “We don’t want to just keep pace with innovation. We want to help shape it.”

Many of the advances now being explored were difficult to imagine only a generation ago. Deep brain stimulation, currently used to treat Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and essential tremor, is being studied for a growing range of neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Dr. DeMassi, who performs deep brain stimulation procedures at Memorial, believes the field is only beginning to show its potential. “In the future, it’s going to be used for potentially treating someone who’s had a stroke and is paralyzed on the right side of their body, or has addiction or severe depression,” he says.

As conversations around brain health continue this month, the bigger opportunity is to look beyond awareness and consider what makes progress possible. The future of neuroscience will be shaped by research, innovation and the communities willing to invest in what comes next.
