On April 15, in honor of Transplant Nurses Day, Broward Health Medical Center will recognize our transplant nurses and the ways they contribute to the program and our patients’ success. The Adult Liver Transplant Program at BHMC has had a profound impact on the lives of our patients and their families each year. Transplant nurses play a critical role in every patient’s transplant journey. Providing personalized care is standard practice in the Transplant Program. Transplant nurses are specially-trained, professional, intelligent, and caring nurses who believe in family-centered care.

 

“I see firsthand our nurses’ dedication as they interact with patients on the inpatient floors, the operating room, intensive care unit and the transplant clinic,” said Audra Lopez, ARNP, Program Manager of Liver Transplant Program.

 

The process of organ transplantation is one that occurs over time. It begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the patient, then being placed on a waiting list for an organ, and finally, coordination of the transplant procedure. After surgery, when the patient is ready to go home, our transplant nurses and support team continue to assist patients with successful management of their transplanted liver.

 

In honor of BHMC Transplant Program organ donors and transplant recipients, a recognition bench was recently built by Erik Lopez-Hutton, son of Program Manager Audra Lopez, and placed at the hospital.
