The field of biomedical informatics is creating great opportunities to assist clinicians with the transition from paper to electronic medical records (EMRs), and help them overcome barriers to the adoption of health information technology in order to meet the information demand of the health care system. Healthcare organizations are focusing on the necessary integration of technology and medical applications, which require significant input and leadership. Providing leadership to advance clinical information systems in order to bring evidence-based medicine to the point of care consistent with mission and strategy is of growing importance. Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU’s) Biomedical Informatics program spans a broad range of learning activities in health information technologies (HIT), including the developmentof systems and applications in support of the health care environment. Graduate students are involved in these endeavors, and the main theme of the program’s education and training is creating the leaders who are bridging the gap between medicine and technology. The program actively engages students in integrative practicum projects supported by collaborations with the community, faculty, and researchers throughout the university. NSU’s M.S.B.I. Program is partners with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)’s 10×10 program.
Special topics in health, consumer, clinical, and medical informatics are purposed to facilitate mastering concepts and tools.
 
The course of study is designed such that working professionals will complement their background with new expertise and without career disruption. The 43 credits required for the degree can be taken completely online. In addition to the Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics degree, graduate certificates in Medical Informatics and Public Health Informatics are also available.
 
As a student in Nova Southeastern University’s Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics Program, I have discovered intellectual fulfillment. I am inspired to pursue my goal to enter medical school with an emphasis on developing strong doctor-IT relationships. My background in computer science with over 15 years as a statistical applications programmer in the pharmaceutical, psychiatric, and family medicine fields has provided me with invaluable experience and insight into the potential problems in health care information technology. I have also enjoyed the opportunities to network and learn along with my fellow students in the program who have come from very different backgrounds, e.g., IT, healthcare, business management, education, etc. I look forward to the opportunity to work with health care executives in assisting them to improve quality, reduce medical errors, and save administrative costs. These are the main reasons for growth of the health care IT market, and why I am glad I have chosen to pursue this degree at Nova Southeastern University’s Biomedical Informatics Program.
