Broward Health system-wide has received the 2008 Emerald Award from the Broward County Board of Commissioners for its pollution prevention and recycling efforts. The Emerald Award Program annually recognizes, honors and promotes environmentally sound businesses in Broward County for their efforts to protect the environment

Broward Health submitted a program of pollution prevention and recycling accomplishments practiced throughout its medical centers and clinics in 2008. Included in the many accomplishments were the reduction in volume of regulated medical waste with a corresponding cost savings of over $18,000.00; Purchasing went paperless in requisitions and order tracking; recycling 708 tons of shredded confidential paper, recycling, redistributing, selling or donating over 150 tons of surplus materials such as beds and medical equipment; solvent recycling systems in place in hospital clinical labs, eliminating mercury since 2003, recycling of 300,000 pounds per year of cardboard, plastics, glass and more; installation of radiation detectors that have prevented radioactive patient waste from being incorporated into the regular waste stream, improving the pharmaceutical waste management program that prevents hazardous pharmaceutical waste from going to sanitary sewer and landfill, and a STAR POOLING program to help employees find cost-saving solutions for the commute to and from work, find potential ride share partners, check Tri-Rail rates and Broward County Transit schedules, and more.
