Broward Health Community Health Services has released a new DVD that targets Creole-speaking residents of South Florida and focuses on cardiovascular disease. The educational DVD focuses on prevention, management and treatment of cardiovascular disease, with a focus on hypertension and stroke/transient ischemic attack.

 

The Creole Education DVD, which was funded by a grant provided by Boehringer Ingelheim, was designed to offer the adult Creole-speaking population education on cardiovascular disease, as well as the treatment process, medication adherence, blood pressure testing importance and living a healthy lifestyle, including exercise, diet and nutrition. The DVD also presents easy workouts that participants can do at home and instructional demonstrations on how to take blood pressure and what the numbers mean.

 

The content of the 30-minute DVD was designed to take into account the cultural beliefs of the Creole-speaking population and to assist with adherence to plans of care. This was important as many individuals within the Creole-speaking community stop taking medications or stop plans of care if they feel better, which is dangerous when one is diagnosed with hypertension or heart disease.

 

The DVD is being distributed through a number of outlets, including the Haitian American Nurses Association, Haitian American Physician Association, Broward Health physician offices, Broward Health Broward General Medical Center’s pharmacy and wellness center, community churches and the American Heart Association. Current patients of Broward Health Community Health Services’ Disease State Management also may receive the DVD.
