(Bio)Medical informatics is concerned with the management and use of information in health care. (Bio)Medical informatics is among the fastest growing field due to the federal and local mandates and incentives for the adoption of electronic medical record, e-prescribing, clinical decision support systems, and many other health information technologies in all health care arenas, for the purposes of improving quality of patients care and reducing medical errors.

People working in medical informatics usually have a master’s degree in (bio)medical informatics, health informatics, or public health informatics.

Nova Southeastern University Biomedical Informatics Program offers a course of study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics. It is designed to train future leaders in the development, dissemination, and evaluation of information technology as it relates to the healthcare environment such as hospitals and health systems, health information technology system vendors, eHealth companies, insurers, pharmaceutical companies, and academic institutions.

Healthcare is the largest industry in the country. Information technology is the present and future. Medical informatics is the field where technology meets healthcare. There is a pressing demanding for professional who can speak both languages (IT and HC). Medical informatics programs aim at training professionals who can speak both languages and to be the leaders in the unavoidable transformation / movement.

With its focus on clinical informatics, the M.S.BI program’s curriculum emphasizes on the areas of computer science and its clinical applications in medical informatics, management and program evaluations in health information technology.

This innovative program uses both on campus and online formats to enable working professionals to earn a Master’s degree in biomedical informatics without career disruption. Our students are either from the health care field (e.g. physicians, pharmacists, nurses, clinical laboratory technologist, etc) or from the IT field.

Both on-campus and online courses are offered in the program, however, the majority of our working professional students choose to pursue the degree completely through distance.

Besides offering the master’s degree which requires 43 credits, the NSU’s MSBI program offer public health informatics certificate. Recently, NSU’s MSBI Program was named as the fifth academic institution to partner with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) to offer the 10×10 certificate. The AMIA 10×10 Program’s goal is to train 10,000 health care professionals in applied health and medical informatics by the year 2010. The other four universities offer AMIA’s 10X10 program are: Stanford University Medical School, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Oregon Health & Science University, and University of Illinois at Chicago

According to the latest survey (2008 Compensation Survey – Salaries and Benefits of healthcare IT Professionals – Vendome Group), depending on the settings, previous degrees and field, and the level of position acquired, the median salary varies from l $67,000 – $217,000 depending on the geographic location, nature, and size of the facility.




Hospice of Palm Beach County’s Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program is seeking applicants to apply for fellowship. The year-long clinical curriculum prepares the selected physician for board certification in hospice and palliative medicine. In addition, it contributes to quality end-of-life care by educating physicians in the latest treatments and care relevant to terminally ill patients’ physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs. Designed to further physician education in palliative medicine through practical training and experience in multiple clinical and residential settings, the selected fellow will also gain knowledge through lectures, discussions and mentoring. The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program is a cooperative effort of Hospice of Palm Beach County and JFK Medical Center, and has been generously funded by the Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach County.

According to Richard Levene, DO, FAAFP, FAAHPM, Fellowship Program Director, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Director of Medical Education for Hospice of Palm Beach County, “Our 30 years of compassionate hospice care is the cornerstone behind the program. Fellows will learn in an environment of care, where the way things are done is just as important as the treatments themselves.” Lucy Mead, RN, MS, CHPN, Medical Education Specialist, has been integral in assisting Levene with curriculum development and continued program management.

The Hospice of Palm Beach County Medical Education Department selected Kate Brazzale, M.D., as the first Fellow to participate in the Program which began July 15, 2008. Dr. Brazzale received a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from University College London and completed her residency at the University of Florida, Gainesville in the Family Practice Residency Program serving as Chief Resident in her third year.

Together with the Hospice of Palm Beach County Education Committee, one fellow will be selected each year for participation. The goal is to achieve accreditation in 2010 by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Certification candidates are grandfathered until 2012, so completing an unaccredited program is not a barrier to certification. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2009-2010 fellowship year. The fellow will receive a competitive salary and benefit package based on prevailing regional university compensation for fellowship candidates.




Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing dean, Anne Boykin, R.N., Ph.D., has been honored with the 2009 Visionary Caring Science Award by the Watson Caring Science Institute. “We are excited and honored to have this occasion and pleasure of recognizing Anne,” said Jean Watson, Ph.D., R.N., A.H.N._B.C., F.A.A.N., founder of the Watson Caring Science Institute, and distinguished professor of nursing and endowed chair in Caring Science at the University of Colorado Denver and Health Sciences Center. “It is a delight to acknowledge and make public her leadership and remarkable success as a dean who is dedicated to sustaining Caring science, theory, and philosophy as the foundation of the discipline and profession of nursing.”




Miami Dade College (MDC) students are doing something atypical for an undergraduate two-year college – scientific research. Thanks to a recently-completed state-of-the-art Science Complex located at the North Campus, MDC is helping to advance education in STEM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The complex will also serve as a regional hub for research development.

The new science complex is a valuable tool for all MDC students, who must meet science requirements to graduate. In particular, it will serve as a hands-on training ground for students interested in biotechnology, chemical technology, environmental sciences, and advanced manufacturing, among many other STEM careers. Training in these areas can lead to an array of jobs, from research technologist to environmental scientist.

The 70,000-square-foot complex, funded in part by the State of Florida and two Title V grants from the U.S. Department of Education, is equipped with the latest technology and set in an area of the county where education and career training in the sciences is critically important. It features 21 laboratories with media stations, a Palmetum, a roof-top observatory, classrooms, lecture hall, faculty and administrative offices, botanical garden, greenhouse, chiller plant building, an outdoor plaza, and cafe.




For more than three decades, Dr. Fred Lippman has been building an impressive resume, with professional credentials as a pharmacist, entrepreneur, professor, state legislator and academic administrator. This year, he added another credential to his ever-expanding curriculum vitae: in January, Lippman was appointed chancellor of the Health Professions Division at Nova Southeastern University. Although Lippman was honored to receive the appointment, it was initially bittersweet, since he was being named as successor to Dr. Morton Terry, who had suddenly passed away just weeks before.

Terry founded the NSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and all the programs within the university’s Health Professions Division, and it was under his leadership that Lippman had been serving as executive vice chancellor and provost. But, to Lippman, Terry was much more than a boss or a fellow administrator.

“He was my mentor,” said Lippman, “a father figure and a friend. Working with him was extremely, intellectually worthwhile, and I am honored to have been at his side. He was also one of the true icons of healthcare education.”

Today, in his role as chancellor, Lippman serves as leader of the Health Professions Division; its colleges of Allied Health and Nursing, Dental Medicine, Medical Sciences, Optometry, Osteopathic Medicine and Pharmacy; and 21 programs within the colleges.

For Lippman, the journey began in Brooklyn, N.Y. After graduating from Columbia University’s College of Pharmacy, he moved to South Florida and eventually owned five pharmacies in Hollywood and Ft. Lauderdale. His businesses were successful, and he remained, happily, in the pharmacy business until 1986. During this time, he was very active in public and community service. “I always tried to build bridges,” he said. It’s no surprise to learn that Lippman has been honored with numerous awards for his work in community service and health care.

In 1969, Lippman was appointed commissioner of the South Broward County Hospital District. He found himself involved in a number of different referenda and, soon, was invited to the state capital.

His career took another interesting turn in 1978, when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He served 10 consecutive two-year terms as a state legislator, fighting for legislation to protect children and senior citizens and to improve Florida’s health care systems. He chaired the first healthcare committee in the state House, and played a major leadership role in introducing and passing one of the nation’s first laws to mandate the use of child safety seats. He also created the Florida Department of Health.

In 1984, Terry recruited Lippman to the Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine (SECOM), to serve as a professor and as the first administrative officer at the newly-created College of Pharmacy. Lippman earned a doctoral degree in higher education administration while in this position.

In 1986, he was named vice president of Pharmaceutical Affairs. When SECOM merged with Nova University in 1994 to create Nova Southeastern University, he joined the newly formed Health Professions division. In 1998, he was appointed executive vice chancellor and provost.

Lippman loves his work. “It’s gratifying to be able to provide knowledge to people of all backgrounds, cultures and races.” He compared his work to that of a sculptor. “The students are like refined clay when they first arrive. By the time they graduate, they’re unique pieces of professional art.” Although the demands of his administrative duties severely limit his teaching time these days, he does instruct classes for about six to eight classroom hours each term.

Today, Nova Southeastern University is the nation’s tenth largest independent institution of higher education, with a main campus in Fort Lauderdale and educational centers across Florida and in Las Vegas and Puerto Rico. The university is in demand among aspiring medical professionals, receiving about 30 applications for every open seat (class sizes are capped, based upon accreditation). The College of Dental Medicine alone is the newest such facility in the country and receives more dental applications than any other U.S. dental school. Last month, celebrating its tenth year, the Health Professions Division graduated more than 500 students.

“We interview many of the candidates who apply,” said Lippman, noting that each year, thousands of hopeful, potential students submit applications. “Professionals from the healthcare community take part in the interviews. For example, physicians from our affiliated hospitals sit in during the interviews for our College of Osteopathic Medicine, and community pharmacists sit in during interviews for the College of Pharmacy.”

Currently, Lippman is leading two major facility expansion projects. “We’re building what Thomas Jefferson called an ‘academical village’ on campus,” he said. “It will include an academic area, a medical center consisting of an ambulatory surgery unit and a future hospital, and retail and residential entities. We’re also constructing a 100,000-plus-ft. research and academic center, part of which will provide education in the oceanographic and environmental sciences.”

When not at the university, Lippman spends time at home in Pembroke Pines with Judy, his wife of 47 years and their beloved llapso apso. The couple have three grown sons, all of whom have pursued interesting careers. “One lives in New York and works as a writer and director in the music and film industries. Another is an accountant and photographic artist in San Francisco, and the third is a restaurateur in Tallahassee,” said Lippman.

Lippman is a major sports fan who has held Dolphins season tickets since 1970, and also enjoys baseball and hockey. He’s a very avid reader, too, staying up to date with the pharmacy field.

With all his professional accomplishments, does he ever miss being a pharmacist?

“Once a pharmacist, always a pharmacist,” he said with a laugh.
