Hospice of Palm Beach Countys Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program is seeking applicants to apply for fellowship. The year-long clinical curriculum prepares the selected physician for board certification in hospice and palliative medicine. In addition, it contributes to quality end-of-life care by educating physicians in the latest treatments and care relevant to terminally ill patients physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs. Designed to further physician education in palliative medicine through practical training and experience in multiple clinical and residential settings, the selected fellow will also gain knowledge through lectures, discussions and mentoring. The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program is a cooperative effort of Hospice of Palm Beach County and JFK Medical Center, and has been generously funded by the Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach County.
Florida Atlantic Universitys Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing dean, Anne Boykin, R.N., Ph.D., has been honored with the 2009 Visionary Caring Science Award by the Watson Caring Science Institute. “We are excited and honored to have this occasion and pleasure of recognizing Anne,” said Jean Watson, Ph.D., R.N., A.H.N._B.C., F.A.A.N., founder of the Watson Caring Science Institute, and distinguished professor of nursing and endowed chair in Caring Science at the University of Colorado Denver and Health Sciences Center. “It is a delight to acknowledge and make public her leadership and remarkable success as a dean who is dedicated to sustaining Caring science, theory, and philosophy as the foundation of the discipline and profession of nursing.”
Miami Dade College (MDC) students are doing something atypical for an undergraduate two-year college scientific research. Thanks to a recently-completed state-of-the-art Science Complex located at the North Campus, MDC is helping to advance education in STEM disciplines science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The complex will also serve as a regional hub for research development.
The new science complex is a valuable tool for all MDC students, who must meet science requirements to graduate. In particular, it will serve as a hands-on training ground for students interested in biotechnology, chemical technology, environmental sciences, and advanced manufacturing, among many other STEM careers. Training in these areas can lead to an array of jobs, from research technologist to environmental scientist. The 70,000-square-foot complex, funded in part by the State of Florida and two Title V grants from the U.S. Department of Education, is equipped with the latest technology and set in an area of the county where education and career training in the sciences is critically important. It features 21 laboratories with media stations, a Palmetum, a roof-top observatory, classrooms, lecture hall, faculty and administrative offices, botanical garden, greenhouse, chiller plant building, an outdoor plaza, and cafe.
For more than three decades, Dr. Fred Lippman has been building an impressive resume, with professional credentials as a pharmacist, entrepreneur, professor, state legislator and academic administrator. This year, he added another credential to his ever-expanding curriculum vitae: in January, Lippman was appointed chancellor of the Health Professions Division at Nova Southeastern University. Although Lippman was honored to receive the appointment, it was initially bittersweet, since he was being named as successor to Dr. Morton Terry, who had suddenly passed away just weeks before.
