In 2007, the first class of University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM) medical students will begin the four year undergraduate medical education program at the regional medical campus at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The acceptance of these students into a four year private medical school program located on the campus of a public university, which is the culmination of over 10 years of planning and negotiations between the collaborating universities, their respective governing boards, the state legislature and community hospital affiliates, provides a unique model for U.S. medical education. The decision to create a regional campus of the University of Miami medical school at Florida Atlantic University was reached by the Florida Board of Governors and the State Legislature after a lengthy examination of various alternatives to increasing the physician workforce, including: (a) expanding the capacity of the state’s four existing allopathic medical schools, on either their main campuses or through creation of regional campuses; (b) establishing new medical schools; and/or (c) creating new residency programs. As a result of this analysis, the Board of Governors and Legislature concluded that creation of the UMMSM at FAU regional medical campus would be the most cost effective and expedient method to meet the over-arching goal of increasing the supply of physicians practicing in Florida by expanding access to both medical school and residency training in the most heavily populated area of the state. Creation of the UMMSM at FAU regional medical campus was determined to be significantly less expensive for taxpayers than creating new medical schools and considerably less expensive than expanding the enrollment on the main campuses of the existing medical schools. For example, the University of Florida, University of South Florida and University of Miami medical schools have estimated that they could collectively expand their enrollment by 162 students at a cost to the state of approximately $22.4 million in annual operating costs and $69.6 million in facilities costs. Creation of the FSU medical school, with a total enrollment of 480 students, has cost state taxpayers $65 million in facilities costs and approximately $38 million in annual operating costs. By contrast, current estimates indicate the establishment of UMMSM at FAU, which will ultimately have 256 students, will cost state taxpayers $14.4 million in annual operating costs, with no significant new construction funding required in the near future.

Establishment of UMMSM at FAU has also created a window of opportunity for UMMSM to develop and implement a truly unique and innovative educational track on the regional medical campus that will be distinguished from the main campus curriculum by (a) a major emphasis on community-based training in multiple community hospital and outpatient sites that is very different from the primarily in-patient based University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Medical Center experience; (b) extensive experience with continuity care of chronic illness, health maintenance / disease prevention, and team-based complex disease management with an emphasis on caring for the aging population in a community setting; and (c) integration of new competencies such as process evaluation, quality management, outcomes assessment, patient satisfaction, patient safety and systems-based care into the curriculum. In addition, the smaller class size on the regional medical campus provides an opportunity for lower student/faculty ratios and a much more personal, individualized and interactive learning environment.

UMMSM is in the process of establishing academic affiliations with multiple community hospitals, including Boca Raton Community Hospital, which plans to build a new facility on the FAU campus that will serve as the regional medical campus’ primary teaching hospital. An application has already been submitted for the first new UMMSM-sponsored residency program in internal medicine at JFK Medical Center and the West Palm Beach V.A. Medical Center. Additional residency programs are being considered including surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine and medical and surgical subspecialties, with a total of approximately 250-300 positions. Creation of these residency programs in a region of the state that currently has no allopathic residency training will have a positive impact on the regions supply of physicians within five years. Statistics show most physicians establish their medical practices in the communities where they complete their residency training. These new residency programs will also enhance the ability of participating hospitals to attract academically-oriented faculty and well-funded, cutting-edge biomedical research programs, which has traditionally resulted in improved medical care and health outcomes for the entire community. The presence of the UMMSM at FAU regional medical campus and its affiliated teaching hospitals is also anticipated to have a highly beneficial “ripple effect” on the economy throughout Palm Beach and the geographic region as a whole.

With the acceptance of our charter four year class in 2007, UMMSM at FAU will join only two other medical schools in North America with four year regional campuses. The academic medical, healthcare, and federal and state policymaking communities are monitoring the progress of UMMSM at FAU. UMMSM at FAU is off to a great start, and there is every reason to believe that the four year regional medical campus will prove to be one of the most cost-effective and innovative mechanisms to increase the supply of physicians throughout the nation.




The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing recently acquired a new pediatric patient simulator, “Pedia-Sim,” which provides nursing students at the Treasure Coast campus the opportunity to apply their knowledge of pediatric clinical situations in a low-risk, controlled environment.

This state-of-the-art simulator, created by Medical Education Technologies, Inc. (METI), is comprised of a life-like manikin that interfaces with a computer to simulate a 6-year-old child’s responses. Pedia-Sim can recognize and respond to nursing interventions and medications, and has many human physical traits such as a heartbeat and pulse. It can also blink, breath and cry. Students can practice many scenarios on the manikin, such as treating a child experiencing an asthma attack.




When research fellows Mete Akin and Katherine Quinones became the first students accepted into the Research Fellowship Program at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-COM) last year, they approached the opportunity with a great deal of enthusiasm—and a slight sense of trepidation.

“Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect going in,” said Akin, who had amassed four years of research experience prior to and after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “I thought it might be a cold, calculated research group, but it’s been just the opposite.”

Patterned after its successful and highly competitive fellowship in osteopathic principles and practice (OPP), the research fellowship provides participants with a full year of structured training and experience in conceptualizing, conducting, and disseminating research for selected NSU-COM medical students between their second and third years.

In addition to their fellowship year, program participants receive tuition remission for their third and fourth years at the college. “This exciting new fellowship greatly advances research efforts at NSU-COM,” said M. Isabel Fernandez, Ph.D., who serves as director of the NSU-COM Behavioral Health Promotion Program and the Research Fellowship Program. “In today’s competitive environment, it enhances students’ career opportunities by providing them with additional options.”

Although the fellowship program is flexible and tailored to the specific needs and skills of individual students, all fellows participate in three core activities:

  • completing academic coursework
  • serving as a research associate on an existing research study
  • communicating scientific knowledge through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific meetings

The fellows also are afforded an opportunity to participate in the writing and submission of at least one scholarly manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal and at least one abstract submission for presentation at a scientific meeting.

“During the first few months, Dr. Fernandez took us through every aspect of the research process, such as grant preparation and preparing Institutional Review Board forms,” explained Akin. “She also gave us an opportunity to work with data she had already collected on previous projects as well as the freedom to generate papers from it. I then learned how to form my own research questions, do data analysis, write up a paper, and present a poster for a particular topic.”

During the second half of their fellowship year, Akin and Quinones were allowed to establish and implement their own research projects, which has proven to be an immeasurably valuable—and enjoyable—experience. “I’m currently working on an OPP research-related project on the effect of high heels on women’s posture and weight distribution,” said Quinones, who received her undergraduate degree from Florida International University in Miami. “I’m hoping to get 50 to 75 participants involved in the study, so that’s what I’m putting all my energy toward.”

While Quinones is busy with her project, Akin has been equally as industrious on his, which involves polling NSU-COM medical students in each of the four years to assess their health-related behaviors by having them fill out surveys that will be analyzed for statistical data and other research outcomes.

“We’ve both learned a lot, especially about everything you have to do before you actually do the research. It’s been beneficial because you get involved in the whole process,” Quinones explained. “What I really enjoyed, however, was the freedom of thought I was allowed to have. I found that to be quite refreshing since I was so accustomed to going to class and being told what we had to learn. It was really nice to have to come up with something on my own.”




In July 2000, the State of Florida designated the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital as Florida’s official Teaching Nursing Home, with training activities coordinated through the Stein Gerontological Institute (SGI), MJHH’s academic arm. GeriU, AKA the Online Geriatrics University, is an innovative outgrowth of SGI’s mandate to develop education-based strategies for long-term care workforce development and to coordinate a statewide process for disseminating information related to the improvement of geriatric care in long-term care settings to medical and nursing professionals. One of the program’s strong suits is its convenience and practicality. “GeriU,” says MJHH’s medical director, Dr. Michael Silverman, “puts geriatrics at your fingertips, right on the computer. It’s an opportunity for healthcare personnel to develop their skills, understanding and approach to the geriatric patient in an extremely convenient format. GeriU is a cutting edge ‘one-stop shop’ for geriatric training.”

GeriU operates two websites: www.GeriU.org, and www.LTC.GeriU.org. Some information for the general public is posted on the GeriU.org site, covering topics such topics as preventing falls and dealing with dementia, while LTC.GeriU.org is more specifically geared to the long-term care and nursing communities. GeriU Coordinator, Aaron McEntire, explains, “GeriU is an important part of SGI. Right now it’s one of the major things SGI is involved with.” GeriU’s staff consists of McEntire, a programmer, a researcher, a video designer, and an animator/graphic artist, all under the direction of Dr. Jorge Ruiz, who is responsible for overseeing the team and insuring medical accuracy and educational efficacy of content.

One of GeriU’s roles is to provide login geriatrics training for University of Miami medical students. UM geriatrics professors use GeriU to provide educational materials, track the use of online tutorials, and administer online assessments and tests. GeriU also currently offers curricula that satisfy the State of Florida’s requirements for Alzheimer’s and dementia training for long-term care staff statewide, and it has produced a series of training DVD’s designed for nurse education and upper level administrators. Another pilot project involves providing nurses with PDA’s, personal digital assistants, and then assessing how the nurses respond to using a new technology.

Although GeriU was conceived as a statewide online resource for geriatrics education, anyone can use it and it is not Florida specific. Recently, Arkansas’ version of AHCA began distributing the CNA and LPN curricula developed by GeriU to all the nursing homes in that state.




More than 400 friends and family members recently turned out to watch the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine Class of 2010 receive their white coats in a ceremony held at the Broad Center for the Performing Arts on the Miami Shores campus.

The Rite of Passage ceremony, narrated by David Auguste, president of the Class of 2011, continues a tradition at Barry University for podiatric medical students. The lab coats presented to the students have been recognized as the attire of the medical profession since the 1800’s. Each student was presented with their coat by Ramjeet Pemsingh, Ph.D., chair of basic medical sciences and John Nelson, D.P.M., associate dean of clinics.

The School of Podiatric Medicine currently has more than 200 podiatric medical students with approximately 200 hospital-based externships, a 36-month podiatric medical and surgical residency training program and more than 1,000 podiatric graduates.
