The Certification Board of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (CBCCT) announced that Richard Spira, M.D., Radiologist, North Broward Radiologists, PA, has passed the CBCCT certification examination. In addition, he received the American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association Level 3 Cardiovascular CT Certification.

Currently, he is Director of Cardiac CT for Broward Health and North Broward Radiologists, PA, and established the Cardiac CT imaging program for Broward Health. He is the former Vice Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Radiology and Medical Imaging at IPMC. Prior to joining North Broward Radiologists, PA, Dr. Spira was the Chief of Computed Tomography and Associate Chief of Interventional Radiology at Cedars Medical Center in Miami.



Carmen Atesnak and Jacqueline Hertz have received the recognition they deserve. Both caregivers were awarded the annual Dr. Jean Griswold Award for Excellence in Social Services at a meeting of The Florida Health Care Social Workers Association. Atesnak was nominated and chosen for her outstanding work in the field of Hospital Social Services, and Hertz in recognition of her outstanding work as a Guardian.

Carmen Atesnak can be described as the voice of the needy. A discharge planner at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, she is a dedicated social worker who believes in her personal calling to the core of her soul. Jacqueline Hertz is a registered professional guardian, long time senior advocate and is highly involved with various community groups.



Joyce Elam, Ph.D., has been named to the Board of Trustees of Baptist Health South Florida. Dr. Elam is executive dean and James L. Knight Professor of Management Information Systems in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU). She is also Dean of University College.



HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc. announced the grand opening of the pediatric initiative, TiLLi Kids. Over a hundred guests enjoyed the atmosphere at John Martins Restaurant in Coral Gables to commemorate this occasion and to welcome the medical staff, the supporters, sponsors and guests.

The mission of TiLLi Kids is to maximize the overall quality of life for children diagnosed with a terminal illness or life limiting illness (TILLI) and their families. TiLLi Kids brings care and comfort home for the child and provides support to the parents, siblings, and all family ties.

When we think about hospice and palliative care, we typically think of an older adult who has lived a long and fulfilling life; that should be the natural order of things. A child should spend their childhood running, climbing tress and celebrating birthdays. However, the reality is that over 50,000 children die every year in the United States, and less than 1% of these children receive the services they need and deserve due to a lack of programming nationally. HospiceCare of Southeast Florida has always cared for pediatric patients, however, in recent years we have identified the truly unique needs of children and their families. TiLLi Kids was developed in conjunction with Holtz Children’s Hospital’s Palliative Care team to address this need and to help transition children from the hospital to the comforts of their home, where they could be surrounded by all their family. TiLLi Kids focuses on alleviating the pain and suffering of children with a terminal/life limiting illness.

TiLLi Kids Medical Director, Dr. G. Patricia Cantwell is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Miami and the Medical Director of Holtz Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. “Dr. Cantwell has been known to create little miracles within the hospital setting and brings her special magic into the homes of our TiLLi Kids families. We are honored and privileged to have her leadership and commitment and our program is better for it,” stated Zoie Watson, Director of Development in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.



A nationally known nuclear cardiologist, Robert C. Hendel, M.D., has been named director of cardiac imaging and outpatient cardiology in the Cardiovascular Division of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Hendel is leaving his position with Midwest Heart Specialists. Previously he served as director of the coronary care unit and director of nuclear cardiology at Rush University Medical Center, where he remains a professor of medicine. Before joining Rush, he served on the faculty at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine for almost 10 years.
