What is AFHAV?

The mission statement of the Association Healthcare Auxiliaries/Volunteers is as follows:

  • To assist member auxiliaries/volunteer organizations to better serve and support their hospital/healthcare facilities by a mutual exchange of ideas.
  • To stimulate interest with education meetings and to aid in the organization of new volunteer groups.
  • To suggest techniques for the development and expansion of auxiliary/volunteer services within healthcare facilities and to promote health education in the community.

Who is AFHAV?

AFHAV/s Board of Directors is made up of 25 very active healthcare Auxilians and Volunteers throughout the state. The Board meets five times a year for three days of brainstorming, networking and reporting, as well as fellowship and laughter. We welcome new members to the board and invite those active healthcare Auxilians and Volunteers who are interested to apply.

We encourage our members to attend Hospital Legislature Day in Tallahassee. This is an opportunity to visit with the legislators to show support for healthcare issues concerning our facilities and medical staff. Our Leadership Retreat is a two-day education and networking retreat for all Auxiliary leaders from all over the state.

Our state Auxiliary is divided into five geographical Districts, each of which is headed by a District Representative. There are annual meetings for each District throughout the year. During the year, each district has mini-meetings hosted by different hospital auxiliaries in their District. These mini-meetings are an interaction and exchange of information quite useful to Presidents of auxiliaries to bring back to their own membership. These verbal exchanges provide for an informed and up to date Auxiliary.

There is one Annual State Meeting in November. At that meeting, there are educational seminars as well as a Trade show and Exhibition for gift shop managers, and exhibitors for items to sell in our Hospitals for fund raisers.

Parkway Regional Medical Center’s Chief Nursing Officer Rhue Lamont has named Natalie Jones as the hospital’s new surgical services director.

Jones began her career 24 years ago at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Lake Worth and served in several capacities, including medical-surgical nurse and operating room charge nurse. She joins Parkway from her previous position as surgical services manager at Mercy Hospital in Miami.

Jones earned her master’s degree in business administration from Nova Southeastern University, bachelor’s degree in health care administration from Florida Atlantic University and associate’s degrees in nursing and liberal arts from Palm Beach Community College. She is on the board of directors of the Miami chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses and is actively involved in the South Florida Organization of Nurse Executives.



Bradley S. Feuer, D.O., J.D., was recently promoted to the rank of auxiliary Lieutenant Colonel and appointed to the position of Chief Surgeon in the Florida Highway Patrol. Dr. Feuer, a physician and attorney who is the Regional Director of Medical Education of the Palm Beach Centre for Graduate Medical Education, an alliance of Columbia Hospital, JFK Medical Centre and Palms West Hospital, was appointed the first Troop Surgeon in the State of Florida Highway Patrol in 2003. During this time period he created a voluntary medical unit within the State Patrol and has volunteered hundreds of hours in assisting the Florida Highway Patrol in such activities as responding to sick or injured troopers, directing a newly-formed Critical Incident Stress Management Team and serving as Medical Director of the Troop’s Tactical Response Team.

Bradley S. Feuer, D.O., J.D. (center) is congratulated by his wife, anesthesiologist Ileana Feuer, D.O., and Florida Highway Patrol Troop L Commander, Major Miguel A. Guzman. Dr. Feuer was promoted to auxiliary Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Chief Surgeon in the Florida Highway Patrol.



Proceeds raised at the JFK Medical Center Foundation golf tournament were recently distributed at the Atlantis Country Club. This was the first year for the Pro/AM Golf Classic. Dr. Jay Midwall., co-director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at The Heart and Vascular Institute at JFK Medical Center, was the chairman of the charitable event.

Donations were given to Mended Hearts, JFK Heart Institute Chapter, American Heart Association for the 2006 Heart Walk which is being chaired by JFK Medical Center CEO, Gina Melby, and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University residency program.



James C. Sawran was recently appointed by The Florida Bar Board of Governors to serve a two-year term, effective July 1, 2006, on The Florida Medical Malpractice Joint Underwriting Association Board of Governors. Sawran, a partner at the Fort Lauderdale-based law firm of McIntosh, Sawran, Peltz & Cartaya, P.A., joins an elite group as the sole attorney member of the Association’s Board. The Association is the State of Florida’s sanctioned insurance plan for medical malpractice coverage.
