Westside Regional Medical Center’s (WRMC) Chief Nursing Officer, Rosemarie Hayes, RN, MSN, has recently been promoted to CNO at JFK Medical Center.

Rosemarie has been with Westside since January 2004. During her tenure at WRMC, she has implemented many programs including the Clinical Ladder Program, a shared governance model and the rapid response team. Rosemarie has a strong focus on education of the nursing staff.

Rosemarie has her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science degree in Nursing and is a recent graduate of the Wharton Fellows program in management for nursing executives.



The Jupiter Medical Center Auxiliary recently announced the election of their 2007-2008 Board of Directors. The new officers are Anita Seidemann, President; Marilyn Lawrence, Executive Vice President; Maddie Hamot, Vice President; Frank Wiesler, Secretary; Ebba Forgue, Assistant Secretary; and Margaret Clarke, Treasurer.



The Florida Heart Research Institute has named Dr. Dominick J. Angiolillo, Associate Director of Cardiovascular Research at the University of Florida/Jacksonville, its fourth “Stop Heart Disease Researcher of the Year” at the annual meeting of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (FCACC).

“The future in cardiovascular medicine belongs to those who can integrate the biochemical and cellular research with clinical knowledge,” said Kathleen DuCasse, Chief Executive Officer of the Florida Heart Research Institute, in presenting the award.

Dr. Angiolillo’s ground-breaking efforts in both the clinical and basic science arenas have paved the way for these advances. Most recently, his outstanding work on physiology and genetics of platelet function, as well as on the mechanisms of atherosclerotic inflammation have advanced our understanding of coronary artery disease, as well as opening new vistas for potential therapies.

This prestigious award is granted to the individual within the State of Florida whose research is felt to have had the broadest impact on the advancement of knowledge in the diagnosis and/or treatment of cardiovascular disease. To be considered for the award, the researcher must be nominated by a colleague, conduct research within and be a resident of Florida, be active in the arena of clinical and/or basic science, and have reported the results of his or her work in the peer review arena of scientific meetings and/or publications. For his achievements in cardiovascular research, Dr. Angiolillo received $25,000 from the Florida Heart Research Institute to be applied toward future cardiac research in Florida.



In a move to help meet the future demands of public healthcare services, the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners recently approved the purchase agreement with a subsidiary of Tenet Healthcare Corporation to acquire Hollywood Medical Center (HMC) for $32 million. The sale is expected to be completed by November 30.

“With the population in South Broward expected to increase by 10 percent in the next five years and with the reality that people are living longer, demand for additional hospital beds and operating rooms will continue to rise significantly,” said Shane Strum, chairman, South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners. “Memorial holds an impressive reputation for delivering top-notch healthcare services to residents of our community regardless of ability to pay, and this acquisition is being made with the community in mind.” Hollywood Medical Center employees will be given the opportunity to join Memorial Healthcare System’s workforce. Physicians affiliated with HMC will be able to apply for membership to Memorial’s medical staff.

The Florida Hospital Association announced the 2006 Hospital Hero of the Year at its 79th Annual Meeting in Orlando. Kelley Cowan, CLS, a Child Life Specialist at the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, part of the Lee Memorial Healthcare System, received the honor at a standing-room-only meeting of the association.

Cowan, who serves as a Child Life Specialist in the hospital’s Pediatric ICU, was nominated by one of the hospital’s pediatric nurses. “I wanted to nominate Kelly for this award because I feel she deserves it, for she truly is a hero on our unit,” said Kelly Cunningham, RN, in her nomination essay.

Cowan received her award with her husband, a Marine who recently returned from Iraq, from the FHA’s Board Chair, Sue Brody.
