Parkway Regional Medical Center has been honored with the American Heart Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM (GWTG) Initial Performance Achievement Awards for implementing aggressive treatment options and a higher standard of care for cardiac patients. The hospital received commendations for both Heart Failure and Coronary Artery Disease.

“Get With The Guidelines is a quality improvement initiative that provides our hospitals’ staffs with tools that are critical for saving the lives of cardiac patients,” explained Ralph A. Aleman, market vice president of Tenet’s Miami-Dade/Broward Health Network. “We are pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in cardiac care.”

To receive these awards, hospitals must consistently adhere for a 90-day period to evidence-based guidelines and procedures proven to prevent future hospitalizations. Under both GWTG programs, hospital patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics, and anticoagulants. Heart failure patients also receive alcohol/drug use and thyroid management counseling and referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged, and coronary artery disease patients receive smoking cessation and weight management counseling and referrals.



Baptist Hospital has received the 2006/07 Consumer Choice Award for the 11th year in a row for being a top healthcare provider in Miami. The hospital was chosen by the community’s healthcare consumers for having the best overall quality and image.

The National Research Corporation, a leader in healthcare performance measurement, announced 234 winners in 190 markets across the country and listed Baptist Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital as co-winners for Miami. The nation’s winners were recently announced in Modern Healthcare magazine.



Four new members have been elected to four-year terms on the Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) Board of Directors.
Joe Arriola is the Managing Director for MBF Healthcare Partners. Previously, Arriola served as Chief Administrator/City Manager for the City of Miami.
Gary M. Gregory serves as Vice President for USI Insurance. Gregory served as Chairman of the MCH Board in 1993 and 1994.
Donna H. Huck is a consultant with Herner Block and Associates. Huck is a founding member of Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Community Council, a fundraising group. She served as Chairman of the MCH Board in 1991.
Juan Carlos Mas is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Neff Corporation. Mas served as Chairman of the MCH board in 2000 through 2003. He also serves on the board of the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation.


Tarannum S. Khan, M.D., has joined Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Department of Neurology, where she will specialize in Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, and gait disorders. Dr. Khan comes to Cleveland Clinic Florida after two years of private practice in Broward County.

Dr. Khan earned her bachelor’s degree at the Women’s College of Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, India, before completing medical school at the university’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College. Her advanced training began in India with an internship at Gandhi Hospital. She also completed an internship and residency at New York Hospital Medical Center in Queens. Dr. Khan’s neurology residency, neurology research fellowship, and movement disorder fellowship were completed at Cleveland Clinic Florida.



CAC-Florida Medical Centers has expanded its roster of physicians with the addition of three board certified medical practitioners.

Jose Nicolas Aponte, M.D., is board certified in internal medicine. Prior to joining CAC, Dr. Aponte was a hospitalist physician at Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital. Dr. Aponte has written publications on The Cardiac Findings of Children Affected by Congenital Rubella and Cholesterol Levels in Patients with Colon Cancer. Dr. Aponte received his degree in medicine from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Leslie M. Greene, M.D., M.P.H. is board certified in family medicine and a member of the American Medical Association and the American Board of Family Medicine. Prior to joining CAC, Dr. Green was in private practice in Orlando. He has also been an adjunct professor at Essex County College in Newark, NJ and a senior registrar at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Dr. Green received his degree in medicine from the University of Medicine in Varna, Bulgaria. He also holds a master’s in public health degree from Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.

Jorge Loredo, D.O. is board certified in internal medicine. Prior to joining CAC, Dr. Loredo was in private practice in Miami Beach. He is currently a clinical assistant professor and a member of the Selection Committee for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center and has also served as clinical assistant professor at Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Loredo received his degree in medicine from Nova Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Miami, Fl. Dr. Loredo was awarded Intern of the Year 2001-2002 and Resident of the Year 2003-2004 from the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.
