Two Kindred Hospital’s in South Florida have been granted The 2006 First Quarter Hospital Employee Performance Awards. Kindred Hospital Coral Gables received The Gold Award for the 5th time in 11 quarters and Kindred Hospital of Fort Lauderdale received the Silver Award.

The Gold Award designates the hospital with the highest overall performance for all five quality and performance standards. The Silver Award goes to the hospital in each region with the most improved performance score over the previous quarter for all program standards.



West Boca Medical Center announces Stephanie Sherman has been named the hospital’s new director of human resources.

Sherman has more than 15 years of experience in human resource leadership, most recently serving as interim director and human resources manager at Delray Medical Center and Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital. A former cardiology practice administrator, she has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business and education from State University of New York – Albany. Sherman is a member of the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration and the Society for Human Resource Management.



The medical staff of Imperial Point Medical Center (IPMC) has elected family practice physician, William Jensen, D.O., as chief of staff. He succeeds Dr. Jason Gates, who served as chief of staff from 2004-2006.

Dr. Jensen is Board Certified in Family Medicine and has been practicing for 15 years in Pompano Beach. He will continue with his active practice while fulfilling his duties as chief of staff.

At IPMC, Dr Jensen has served as vice chief of staff from 2004-2006, chief of the department of medicine from 2002-2004, vice chief of medicine and chairman of the credentials and qualifications committee from 2000-2002, and secretary and treasurer of the department of medicine from 1995-2000. He has served as a member of the medical council since 2000 and as a member of the North Broward Hospital District’s Joint Conference Committee since 2004.

Dr. Jensen is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic Family Physician, and the Broward County Osteopathic Medical Association.

After graduating medical school at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Jensen completed an internship at the Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center. He finished his residency at Southeastern College Osteopathic Medicine in North Miami Beach, Florida. He is a native of Chicago and resides in Pompano Beach with his wife Susan and their two children.



Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science (FAU CESCoS) recently announced that Dr. David J. Lewkowicz, professor of psychology, has been elected president of the International Society on Infant Studies (ISIS). Dr. Lewkowicz’s term will begin in 2008 and continue for two years.

Dr. Lewkowicz’s election signifies his colleagues’ recognition of his scientific contributions to the field of infant research. As the current president-elect, Dr. Lewkowicz’s main responsibility is to coordinate the society’s biennial conference in 2010. This conference is the principal venue where infant development researchers meet to present and discuss the latest findings from their research and share them with the public-at-large.



Eduardo A. Otero, M.D., corporate medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital at Broward General Medical Center, has been named to the Board of Trustees at Barry University, President Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD announced.

A resident of Miami-Dade County since the late 1960’s, Otero is charged with providing clinical and administrative leadership to a group of five physicians and four advanced neonatal nurse practitioners in a 63-bed, level III newborn intensive care unit. He has led numerous local medical groups and departments, including the Pediatrix Medical Group (director, interim physician services, 1995-96) and Pediatric Department Quality Assurance Committee at Broward General Medical Center (chairman, 1999-2004).

His career as an associate neonatologist began in 1992, working at BGMC, the Coral Springs Medical Center and Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach. From 1993-95, Otero was medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He is licensed in the states of Florida, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Virginia, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio, and is a member of the Florida Pediatric Society, Florida Society of Neonatologists, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, American College of Physician Executives, Cuban Pediatric Society in Exile, Inc., and Miami Medical Team.
