Boca Raton Community Hospital announces the appointment of Matthew J. Karpenko, D.O., to the hospital’s medical staff in hematology/oncology. Dr. Karpenko attended osteopathic medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA. He completed his internship and residency programs at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City, NY in internal medicine. He went on to complete a hematology/oncology fellowship at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, OH.

Boca Raton Community Hospital announces the appointment of Pedro E. Juan, M.D., to the hospital’s medical staff. He is board certified in internal medicine. Dr. Juan attended medical school at Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He completed his internship and residency programs at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.



Jasmin Shirley, vice president of Community Health Services for Broward Health, was the guest of honor at the Red Rose Ball in Freeport Grand Bahama, Bahamas. The ball is one of the largest charity events in the Bahamas with proceeds benefiting the Grand Bahama AIDS Awareness Committee.

Catholic Hospice names Meredith Feinberg Director of Marketing and Admissions. A seasoned sales executive, with extensive training and management experience, Feinberg previously held positions with Pharmacia, Forest Pharmaceuticals, and McKesson. She received her BA from Clemson University and will begin pursuing her MBA in the fall.



Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Medical Center Campus recently entered into a collaborative agreement with the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL).

Medical Center Campus president, Dr. Anita Kaplan, will signed the agreement along with APHL’s Eva Perlman, senior director of professional development. This agreement will facilitate further collaboration between the two organizations in bringing scientists and healthcare workers from developing countries to train at MDC to better fight the spread of AIDS and other diseases.

Last fall, the college’s School of Health Sciences trained 12 biologists from Mozambique to use new techniques to help tackle the AIDS epidemic in their homeland. Their three month training program at MDC culminated with a special graduation ceremony and dinner in December. The students in this program hold bachelor’s degrees in biology and related science disciplines and work professionally at hospitals within the Mozambique Ministry of Health. More of these programs are envisioned thanks to the agreement between MDC and APHL.
