North Broward Medical Center’s Marlene Roman, RN, MSN, ARNP, CMSRN, was singled in a group of more than 200 Nursing Spectrum Excellence candidates and their guests at Nursing Spectrum’s Excellence Awards in June. She was selected as the winner of the mentoring category.

Marlene encourages new hires as she orients them to the medical-surgical unit at North Broward Medical Center and supports experienced nurses climbing the clinical ladder. She is known for taking life in stride, keeping a smile on her face and never complaining. Her coworkers know they can count on her for sound advice.

As president of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, Roman started a mentoring program, Nurses Nurturing Nurses, designed to retain new nurses at facilities across the country.

Another North Broward Medical Center nurse, Tryce Cabaj, RN, ONC, the assistant nurse manager of the orthopedic/neuro/trauma unit was a finalist at the Nursing Spectrum’s Excellence Awards. Tryce is known for staying cool under pressure. Staff nurses feel comfortable coming to her with questions and view her as an expert resource. They draw on her wisdom and experience in assessing patients for suspected complications. No matter how busy the day, Cabaj always wears a smile, and staff and physicians alike enjoy working with her. She has lectured about pain management to community college nursing students and published a paper about epidural analgesia in a professional journal.



North Broward Medical Center announces the appointment of Don Lewis to the position of Physician Services Manager.

Prior joining NBMC, Lewis, was the District Manager of the Sports Medicine for the North Broward Hospital District where he directed the sports medicine program for 20 area high schools, providing physicians and athletic trainers. Previously, he was the Regional Manager of Sports Medicine at Coral Springs Medical Center. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Human Services.



Memorial Hospital Miramar recently hosted a graduation celebrating 21 students completing the International Association for Safety and Security course. This course contains extensive general knowledge of Security Officer procedures and additionally contains many chapters specific to the special needs of healthcare Security Officers.

Following this course, students are sent to Corporate Security Academy in Ft. Lauderdale for the required State of Florida Security Officer training and to obtain their Security Officer licenses.

Only a limited number of our graduates were able to attend the ceremony because most of those who were unemployed have already been offered positions and are either working or are in orientation for their new positions.



West Boca Medical Center has welcomed three new directors to its management team. They are Cheryl Davis, R.N., director of the telemetry unit; Leslie Leibowitz, R.N., M.S.N., director of the medical-surgical unit; and Maria Torres, R.N., M.S.N., director of emergency services.

Davis, the new director of the telemetry unit, joins the hospital from Parkway Regional Medical Center where she was the director of telemetry. She has 20 years of nursing experience and has served in management roles the past 18 years.

Leibowitz, the new director of the surgical unit comes to West Boca Medical Center from Aventura Hospital where she served as director of the medical/surgical and oncology units. She has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Adelphi University and a master’s degree in nursing from Florida Atlantic University. Leibowitz is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society.

Torres, the new director of emergency services, previously served as director of the telemetry unit at West Boca Medical Center. She has 25 years of experience in emergency nursing and critical care and has served in management for the past 10 years. Torres has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from College of New Rochelle, N.Y., and a master’s degree in nursing from University of Phoenix. She is a member of the Emergency Nurses Association and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.



The Medical Staff of Columbia Hospital has granted scholarships in the amount of $500 each to five hospital employees. The scholarship recipients are:

Donette Morgan, PCA/MT, who has been employed since May 2002 and is working part time in Physical Therapy while completing studies to become a Radiology Technician. She is scheduled to graduate December 2006.

Yvetta Wilson, LPN, has been employed since March 1991 and is currently going to school for her R.N. Degree.

Sharon F. Beckley, CPCS, CPMSM, has been employed since April 1993 and is currently a student at Liberty University and is working towards her A.A. Degree in General Studies.
