Plantation General Hospital (PGH) has recently appointed Debbie Marotto as the hospital’s new Director of Women’s Services.

Debbie comes to PGH from Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada where she was the Labor and Delivery Charge Nurse for 2 years. Prior to working at Southern Hills Hospital, she held the same position at Sunrise Hospital, also in Las Vegas. Debbie began her career with HCA in 1993 as the Nurse Manager of Women’s Services and Surgical Services.

She received an Associate’s Degree from Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, New York. Debbie is currently taking courses towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing through Indiana State University.

Among her many accomplishments and earned certifications throughout her career with HCA, Debbie is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, a Certified Childbirth Educator, Instructor for Neonatal Resuscitation Program and an RN in Outpatient Obstetrics.



Steven J. Smith, M.D., and Luis Sala, M.D., proudly announce that Stephen Harkness, M.D., FACS, has joined their general surgeon practice in Marathon and that all 3 doctors are on active staff at Fishermen’s Hospital.

Dr. Harkness was a Clinical Teaching Instructor in Surgery at Tulane Department of Surgery and has been in private practice for more than 20 years in New Orleans, LA.

Dr. Harkness specializes in all aspects of general surgery, advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery. He is highly trained, board certified in general surgery and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.



The Public Health Trust recently approved the proposed acquisition of Parkway Regional Medical Center in North Miami Beach from Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Jackson Health System has entered into a definitive agreement with Tenet, which is subject to the approval of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.

The expansion of Jackson into north Miami-Dade enables Jackson Health System to provide medical care to residents throughout the county by adding capacity to its main campus hospital in downtown Miami and to Jackson South Community Hospital. It is anticipated to take several months to complete the purchase and transition Parkway Regional Medical Center into the Jackson Health System.

“The benefits of this expansion are compelling, beginning with the ability to increase our margin—that is, the number of funded patients that we serve—in order to support our mission of providing care to all Miami-Dade residents, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Marvin O’Quinn, president and CEO of the Jackson Health System/Public Health Trust. “In addition, it gives us the capacity, such as hospital beds and operating/exam rooms, to better handle our current and growing demand.”



Bonnie L. Mackey, CPA, a partner with Levin, Silvey, Zelko & Co., PA in Hollywood, received the 2006 Public Service Award from the National Organization of the AWSCPAs, the ABWA’s 2006 Spirit of Excellence Small Business Leader of the Year award and was a finalist for the 2006 Key Partners Award in the Accounting/Tax category presented by the South Florida Business Journal. She previously received the 2005 South Florida Business Journal’s award for Excellence in Accounting in the Estate & Trust category, and in 2001 the NAWBO Vista award along with the Circle of Excellence award from the Women’s Council of Commerce.

Bonnie has been a resident of South Florida since 1965 and a practicing CPA since 1995. She graduated from the University of South Florida in 1992 with an extended Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Degree. In 2000, Bonnie received her Certified Specialist in Estate Planning (CSEP) designation from the National Institute for Excellence in Professional Education, LLC. She is also a Certified Quick Books Pro advisor for 2003 & 2006. Her background includes all facets of accounting, including financial statement and tax preparation, as well as computer software and bookkeeping assistance.



Jackson Memorial Hospital recently announced that Arthur L. Diskin, M.D., FACEP, will serve as Medical Director/Chief of Emergency Services at the hospital’s Emergency Care Center (ECC).

Dr. Diskin is Board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is past president of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians.

Prior to joining Jackson, he served for 15 years as the chief of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.

Dr. Diskin received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He completed his residency at the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center.
