Four registered nurses at VITAS Innovative Hospice Care® of Broward County recently passed the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (CHPN), demonstrating their knowledge, skill, experience and general excellence in end-of-life care.

Elizabeth Jerome, RN, BSN, CHPN, of North Lauderdale has worked for VITAS for nine years. She is a team manager providing support for residents of a local assisted living community.

Eileen McDermott, RN, CHPN, of Coconut Creek has worked for VITAS for seven years. She is an admissions nurse.

Ellen Ferrick, RN, BS, CHPN, of Margate has worked for VITAS for four years. She works on the contract bed team.

Carol Clarke, RN, CHPN, of Coral Springs has worked for VITAS for two years. She is an admissions nurse.



Charleen R. Szabo has been appointed Medical Center Director of the VA Medical Center, West Palm Beach, FL. Prior to her appointment, Szabo served as Acting Network Director and then Network Director of the VA Stars & Stripes Healthcare Network (VISN 4). Prior to this appointment, she was the Director of the Lebanon (PA) VA Medical Center. Szabo has also served as Associate Director at both the Richmond (VA) and Newington (CT) VA Medical Centers. Szabo began her VA career as a supervisor in Occupational Therapy at the Batavia, New York VA Medical Center and shortly thereafter was a Health Systems Specialist Trainee at the New Orleans (LA) VA Medical Center and a Health System Specialist at the Miami (FL) VA Medical Center.

Szabo received her undergraduate degree in Occupational Therapy from Utica College of Syracuse University. She later received her Masters degree in Public Administration from State University College of New York at Brockport. Szabo is board certified in Healthcare Management and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Szabo is a recipient of the 2001 Graduate Healthcare Administrator Training Program (GHATP) Preceptor Award, 2003 Meritorious Executive Presidential Award and 2006 PA Commendation Medal.



Baptist Health South Florida Foundation named Jim Boruszak Volunteer of the Year for Mariners Hospital.

Boruszak serves as a volunteer with the Mariners Hospital Auxiliary and is a member of the Mariners Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. He also has made generous financial donations to the Foundation to support Mariners Hospital.

A native of Chicago, Boruszak earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the university. A lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, Boruszak saw active duty during the Korean War. Prior to moving to the Keys permanently in 1996, Boruszak owned a small insurance agency, B.L.U. Benefits Group, Inc.



Renaissance Institute of Palm Beach, a Caron Treatment Center, recently presented an educational forum entitled “Living in the Solution: Addiction and the Family, Healing and Recovery.” Held at The Beach Club in Palm Beach, the symposium focused on how substance abuse touches the lives of an entire family. Esteemed panel members included author and recovery advocate Christopher Kennedy Lawford; Charisse Strawberry, former wife of baseball great Darryl Strawberry; and noted specialists David Rotenberg, Executive Director of Caron Adolescent Services and Rich Craig, Renaissance Institute of Palm Beach Program Director.



Jupiter Medical Center announced that John R. Wolf has been appointed as Chief Human Resources Officer. Wolf brings over 25 years of healthcare human resource experience and a history of success in employment, compensation, benefits, employee relations and management development. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Human Resources with Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

Wolf received his Masters in Applied Behavioral Science from Wright State University, and his Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. He also earned the distinction of (SPHR) Senior Professional in Human Resources.
