Jane Mass, R.N., M.S.N., Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President of the Jackson Health System, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Florida Center for Nursing by Governor Charlie Crist. The Florida Center for Nursing is housed in the College of Health and Public Affairs at the University of Central Florida. The Center focuses its efforts on addressing issues of supply and demand for nursing in Florida, including recruitment, retention, and utilization of nurse workforce resources. Mass will work with the other Board members to develop statewide plans for the nursing workforce in Florida, and to convene groups representing nurses and other health care providers, business and industry, consumers, legislators, and educators. These groups will assist the Florida Center for Nursing in reviewing data, recommending systemic changes, and reporting the results of these efforts to the legislature and others. Mass also will work with the Board to enhance and promote recognition, reward, and renewal activities for nurses in Florida.

“It is an honor to be appointed to this Board, whose work impacts every phase of the nursing workforce,” Mass said. “I look forward to contributing my efforts towards this important mission.”

Mass received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston College and a Master’s of Science in Nursing from Boston University. She completed the Matriculated DNS Program at Boston University and participated in the Johnson & Johnson-Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurses at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Mass has held the Chief Nursing Officer position at Jackson Health System since 2004.



Thomas R. Insel, M.D., director of the National Institute of Mental Health, received the 2008 Margaret Ann Aitcheson Humanitarian Award for his visionary commitment to advancing mental health research during a recent ceremony at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

In presenting the award, Julio Licinio, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Miller School, recognized Dr. Insel’s significant contributions to the field of mental health. “Dr. Insel is an inspiration to the field because he raised the bar for mental health research, from symptom control to effective treatments, cures and prevention,” said Dr. Licinio.



Glades General Hospital (GGH) is pleased to welcome Juan C. Cocuy and Rahat Abbas, M.D., to its board of directors.

Cocuy is a CPA and a partner at Cocuy, Burns & Co., PA in Wellington and has more than 20 years of professional accounting, finance and healthcare consulting experience. He is a board member and former chairman of the board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, Inc. and serves on the board of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches.

Dr. Abbas practices as an Internist at Metcare of Everglades in Belle Glade, FL. He currently serves as Chief of the Medical Staff of Glades General Hospital and previously provided services to Palms West Hospital and Wellington Regional Hospital.



Lane Jones has been named to the Board of Directors of Baptist Children’s Hospital Foundation in Kendall. He will also serve as a member of the Baptist Health Foundation Board.

Jones is the Chief Operating Officer with the private wealth management firm of Evensky & Katz. He is a certified financial planner and a chartered financial analyst.

He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Florida and is a graduate of the College for Financial Planning.



Broward Health North Broward Medical Center recently installed their newly elected physician leaders, who play an instrumental role in the success of the hospital.

In the Department of Medicine, Marc Aueron, M.D., cardiology/internal medicine, will serve as Chairman of Medicine; Fernando Quintero, M.D., nephrology, was installed as Vice Chairman of Medicine; and Narendra Maheshwari, M.D., internal medicine, assumes the role of Secretary.

Randy Kimmelman, D.O., general surgery, will serve as Chairman of Surgery; Khalil Burshan, M.D., general and trauma surgery was installed as Vice Chairman of Surgery and Ted Carson, M.D., cardiothoracic surgery, is the new Secretary of the Department of Surgery.

These newly elected officers join current physician leaders Joel Silverman, D.O., FACP, internal medicine, who serves as Chief of Staff at NBMC; Paul Rondino, M.D., FACC, cardiology, Vice Chief of Staff; Randy Kimmelman, D.O., general surgery, is Secretary/Treasurer; and Gary Lehr, M.D., FACS, general surgery, is recognized as Immediate Past Chief of Staff.
