31 bereaved children and 70 volunteers recently came together at Camp Owaissa Bauer in Homestead, FL to make the inaugural Camp Erin-Miami a hopeful experience for all involved. Camp Erin-Miami is an annual three day camp experience offered at no charge and facilitated by professional staff and trained volunteers of HospiceCare of Southeast Florida. The camp is for children from 6 to 17 years of age, who have experienced the death of a loved one. Camp Erin-Miami provides a safe, caring environment and offers fun recreational activities and supportive discussions to help campers build trust, self esteem and coping skills.



The Oakwood Center of the Palm Beaches recently elected a new slate of officers for the 2009/2010 year. Included are Barbara Golden, Ph.D., as incoming Chairman; Richard H. Wilson, Jr., CTFA, as Vice Chairman; Terry L. Morton, Jr., as Treasurer and Immediate Past Chairman; and Paul Gionfriddo as Secretary.

An established clinical psychologist, Dr. Golden began her career as a special educator at Valley View School in Romeoville, IL. She was also a program coordinator; psychologist and administrator at the Elisabeth Ludeman Developmental Center in Park Forest, IL. Dr. Golden also served as director of the Technical Assistance and Training Division of the Illinois Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities before going into private practice in 1990 in Chicago. She has served for 6 years on the Board of Directors for Oakwood Center and currently chairs the Fundraising and Public Relations committee for the Center.

Richard H. Wilson, Jr. has also served 4 years as a Director for Oakwood Center of the Palm Beaches. Wilson is a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor with CitiGroup.

Incoming Treasurer Terry L. Morton is also the Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of Directors for Oakwood Center. A Certified Public Accountant with Nowlen, Holt and Miner, Morton continues his service overseeing all financial aspects for the Center.

Northwest Medical Center (NWMC) now has the latest state of the art MRI technology in Broward County. In April, our GE Signa 1.5T High Definition MR System was upgraded to perform MRI scans in 30% less time. NWMC is the only HCA facility in the East Florida Division able to perform Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA’s) of the Renal, Cerebral, and Carotid arteries as well as the Descending Aorta and Peripheral Run-offs without contrast.

Northwest is able to perform faster MRA’s with contrast showing excellent dynamics and blood flow. One sequence is able to demonstrate 4 different images, water only, fat only, in phase, and out phase providing clear tissue differentiation in a single series as well as eliminating common MR imaging artifacts.

The upgrade provides greater chest and brachial plexus coverage; greater gray/white differential (better contrast) in spinal and nerve root delineation; brain spectroscopy for greater analysis of tumor identification. Other features include SWAN, a volumetric 3D acquisition technique that is sensitive to the difference in different tissues providing micro-calcification and micro-bleed identification in the brain. Abdominal imaging can also be performed with one breath hold.



Susan Barrow, Nurse Manager of Medical–Surgical Oncology at Broward Health North Broward Medical Center, was recently awarded Nursing Spectrum’s “2009 Florida Excellence in Management Award.” This accomplishment puts her in the running for Nursing Spectrum’s “National Nurse of the Year Award,” which will be announced in September.

Susan has been a member of the North Broward Medical Center family for 12 years. For the past four years she has worked as the Nurse Manager of the Medical/Surgical/Oncology and Hospice Unit located in the SE wing of the third floor. Prior to entering the world of healthcare, Susan was a banker in New York City. She decided to enter the medical field after joining the US Navy.



Taweh Beysolow, M.D., brings his knowledge and medical expertise to Lower Keys Medical Center. For the past ten years, he has worked as both nephrologist (kidney doctor) and internist (adult primary care) at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. The doctor is not only board-certified in nephrology, he is also board-certified in internal medicine.

After graduating from Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Beysolow completed an internal medicine internship at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, MA. Following the internship, he completed his residency in internal medicine at both the University of Massachusetts and Harlem Hospital Center in New York, NY. Dr. Beysolow then remained at Harlem Hospital for the next three years to pursue a fellowship in nephrology.
